Sleep Improves Attractiveness

Today is the Winter Solstice which marks the start of winter.  It is the day with the shortest amount of daylight and the longest amount of darkness.  The best thing about this day?  The days following it get a little longer minute by minute until the Summer Solstice!

Take advantage of the darkness with a good night's sleep.  Add a few drops of lavender essential oil to your pillow for a calming effect and better beauty sleep.  A Swedish study shows that sleep really does improve attractiveness! Check it out:

Makeup Lesson: Hide a Blemish

Have a party?  Need to hide that nasty zit! Start with a little Visine to get the red out!  Put a bit of Visine on a Q tip.  Hold the Q tip on the blemish for a minute.  Let the skin dry.  Apply your foundation by patting and blending it on with a sponge.  Using a small, flat makeup brush, apply a thin coat of a thick concealer to the blemish patting around the edges to blend. Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage or Physicians Formula Concealer 101 Perfecting Concealer Duo are examples of thick concealers.  Let it sit a minute.  Apply another thin coat if needed.  Finish with a light dusting of translucent powder to set the makeup.

Eco-friendly Bags and Bacteria

Many of us are now using those reusable grocery bags  to carry home all our healthy beauty foods instead of paper or plastic.  That's good, but I heard there is something for us to worry about.

A study done by the American Chemistry Council found that those reusable bags can carry bacteria from newly purchased food.  That doesn't mean you have to go back the plastic bags. It just means we need to clean our reusable bags.

The remedy: keep your reusable bags clean by washing them frequently with laundry detergent, rinse, and let them air dry.

Class Reunion Makeup Pt. 2

Yesterday, we helped your skin look a little younger and brighter by adding color with blush and bronzer. Today we will focus on accenting your eyes and lips.

Look younger by adding more color to the eyes and lips.  Use a soft shimmer and matte eye shadows in shades of brown, taupe, peach or gray.

Apply a thin line of dark brown, charcoal or black eyeliner to the top lash line.

Curl your lashes for a lifting effect.

Then, take your time applying 2 or 3 coats of brown/black or black mascara to your top lashes.  Apply one thin coat of mascara to the bottom lashes.

Finish with a rosy or peachy coral lipstick topped with a little lip gloss to create fuller, moist, more youthful lips.

Everyone at your class reunion will be amazed at how young and beautiful you look with you fresh makeup.

Q & A: Lip Waxing

Q. Will waxing my upper lip make the hair come back thicker and darker?

A. No.  The first time your upper lip is waxed, the hair will grow  back the same as it was.  It may seem darker because you quickly got used to the skin being smooth and hair free.  Keep on waxing. Hairs become damaged from repeatedly being pulled out.  Hair growth becomes lighter and some hairs won't come back at all!  This is true for any area that is waxed.  Most people have their upper lip waxed every 2-4 weeks depending on how fast their hair grows. Be patient, Eventually the hair will lighten up.

Warm Woolen Mittens!

It's not winter yet, but it's not too early to get out the winter gloves!

Dry Autumn air can cause your hands to get dry.  It's better to begin wearing the woolly mittens early before the chapping gets out of control.

Also, step up the hand cream usage now to prevent chapping. Apply it morning and bedtime and after washing your hands. Keep lotion bottles handy beside your bed, by the sink, in your car, on your desk, etc. And don't forget the rubber gloves while cleaning an doing dishes!

Costume Makeup Removal

Trick or Treat!

Time to dress up and put on some creative Halloween makeup.
After all the fun, you will need to get all that paint off. Start with old fashioned cold cream like Ponds or Noxzema to dissolve heavy costume makeup.

1. Apply the cold cream to your face and massage it in circular in circular motions to loosen the makeup.
2. Use cotton pads to remove the cold cream and makeup.
3. Now, wash your face with a facial cleanser, water and a clean washcloth.
4. Use your toner and apply moisturizer

That should remove all traces of the heavy makeup.

Happy Haunting!

Need a little fake blood for that Halloween costume?  You can easily make it at home with a few simple ingredients.

Fake Blood Recipe

Corn Syrup
Red Food Coloring
Cocoa Powder
Water
Corn Starch

 1. Combine corn syrup with a little red food coloring until you get the color you want.

2. Add a small amount of cocoa powder to darken the color.

3. Add a little water if you want it thinner.

4. Add a little corn starch if you want it thicker.

Chamomile and Ragweed Allergy

ragweed
Fall is ragweed season.  If you are allergic to ragweed, you are could be allergic to chamomile too. They both are in the same botanical family and share some of the same proteins that trigger allergic symptoms such as hives, itchy eyes, skin redness, and irritation in the mouth after drinking chamomile tea.  Avoid chamomile tea, of course, and cosmetic products containing chamomile. Read your labels!

Ocean Potion

Radiation from the sun penetrates the skin causing damage such as age spots and wrinkles!

Use a broad spectrum sun block with an SPF of at least 15 daily.  A broad spectrum block protects your skin from UVA rays (the aging, wrinkling rays) and UVB rays (the tanning, burning rays). UVA  rays can pass through glass and are present even on cloudy days year around.

Pay special attention to your face, neck and the back of the your hands which are exposed to the sun all year long.  Keep your sunblock where you apply your makeup.  Apply it, let it absorb, apply makeup.

We tried Ocean Potion SPF 30 and SPF 50 this summer. The SPF 50 worked great even on my fairest product tester. It smells yummy, doesn't feel greasy and is cruelty free.  You can find Ocean Potion at drugstores, superstores, and grocery stores for about $7.99.

Beetle Juice: Carmine

Carmine is a red pigment used in makeup.  It comes from dried female cochineal beetles! Yes, beetles! The coloring comes from carminic acid that is extracted from the dried crushed beetle. It is safe and is also used as a food colorant. Read your labels! Carmine can also be listed as crimson lake, cohineal, natural red 4, C.I. 75470, E120, natural color and added color.  If you want a list of products that do not contain carmine, go to caringconsumer.com and search for cruelty free products and companies.
