Q&A: Hypoallergenic

Q. What does hypoallergenic actually mean?

A.  Hypoallergenic means less allergenic. Ingredients that commonly cause irritation, allergic reactions and dermatitis are not contained in a hypoallergenic product. Lanolin, preservatives such as parabens, and fragrance are examples of common allergens.

It is still possible for a person with allergies and sensitive skin to react to an ingredient in a product even though it is considered to be a hypoallergenic product. If you react to a product, stop using it. Wait for the skin to calm. Take note of the product ingredients. Compare the ingredients to another brand. If the ingredients look different, give it a try.  Clinique, Almay and are cosmetic lines that are hypoallergenic.
