Hawaiian Tropic Shimmer Effect

What a perfect idea!  Sunscreen with a shimmer! I had to have it! Hawaiian Tropic Shimmer Effect Lotion with Sunscreen gets its shimmer from mica. It comes in 20 UVB/SPF with UVA, 40 UVB/SPF with UVA and After Sun Lotion. I chose the 40 SPF. It contains aloe and tropical fruit extracts to moisturize the skin. In indoor light, you can barely see the shimmer. But, step outside and there is a beautiful skin flattering soft shimmer.
It smell great too. About $9.99 at drugstores and of course, is not tested on animals.

Great Little Revlon Nail Buffer

I was looking through the latest People Magazine and I came across a sample of this little Revlon Crazy Shine Nail Buffer.

The Green side smooths the nails and the white side polishes them.  My nails look so shiny, they look like there is clear polish on them!  I love it!
It's only $4.19 at cvs.com.

Please note: Revlon is now on the animal testing list. It wasn't when this was written but it is now.

Clinique Repairwear Laser Focus

Clinique Repairwear Laser Focus wrinkle and UV damage corrector is the latest anti-aging serum from Clinique. It is a fragrance free, hypoallergenic serum that claims to obviously reduce lines, wrinkles and sun damage in 4 weeks. By 12 weeks of use, the reduction of lines, wrinkles and improved texture are close to the result from a laser procedure. They claim a 63% improvement! I just had to try it.

It contains peptides including Retinyl Palmitate to boost collagen production, anti-oxidants to fight free radicals and help reverse UV damage and collagen loss, and enzymes to help protect cells from free radical damage and enhance the skin's natural healing. I have been using it morning and night for about 4 weeks. What's the verdict? I like it! So far my skin texture has improved. It feels smoother and lines do seem softer.  A couple sun spots seem a bit lighter in color but not all of them. It does not irritate my skin at all. I will definitely keep using it for 12 weeks and see if there is any dramatic improvement as Clinique claims.

Use 3-4 drops of the serum in the morning and at night on your face and around the eyes.  I do my neck too. Apply moisturizer on top. This product does not contain a sunscreen so be sure to use one on top during the day. It costs $44.50 at clinique.com and at the Clinique counter. I'll check back in at 12 weeks of use to let you know the results!

Important Note: This product and all other brands from the Estee Lauder Group are now on the tested on animals list. I no longer use Clinique products.

Eyelid Dermatitis: Red Flaky Eyelids

eyelid dermatitis
Eyelid Dermatitis is the inflammation of the eyelids due to an irritant or allergic reaction. The eyelids become red flaky and irritated. The skin becomes scaly and crinkly looking. The eyelids burn and itch. This is a pic of my friend's swollen eyelid. She was using Latisse to try and grow her lashes and feels this could have caused her dermatitis. She also questioned if her hair spray caused it which happens to be a common cause.

Hair Products
One of the most common causes of eyelid dermatitis is hair styling products. Gels, mousses, hair sprays etc. can migrate onto the face during application.  These products also transfer to your pillow as you sleep and then to your face.

Eye Makeup
You would immediately think it was an eye makeup product that caused the problem but most likely, eye makeup is not the culprit. Eye makeup is formulated with ingredients that are proven to be safe to use around the eyes. It is possible to be allergic to anything, though. Some people are allergic to certain color pigments in makeup.

More Allergens
Other possible allergic causes that you may not think of right away can be cosmetics containing perfume, nail polish, preservatives in products, latex makeup sponges, latex applicators, tools such as tweezers and lash curlers containing nickel and medications.

Remedies:
Try to eliminate the all possible causes.

Stop using your hair styling products and other possible irritants.

Use a gentle unscented facial cleanser and moisturizer.

Apply a very thin layer of petroleum jelly to the eyelids.

Use cold compresses to reduce inflammation.

Keep eye makeup to a minimum.

See your doctor for medication.

Be sure to wash your hair before bed and use a clean pillowcase each night.

Sun glasses are great for hiding your irritated eyes!

After You Heal
After the irritation clears, introduce cosmetic products one by one. That way you will know which product triggered the problem if the problem happens to occur again. Try using products listed as hypoallergenic and fragrance free. Keep your hair styling products to a minimum.

It's possible that you may not be able to pinpoint the culprit. Sometimes, the problem clears and never occurs again. It's a good idea to stick to minimal products strategy after a bout with eyelid dermatitis anyway.
