5 Tips to Stop Nail Biting

Christmas is over and it is time to set our sites on New Year's. Time to make resolutions and find ways to improve ourselves and our world in the coming year. Some things seem completely out of our reach but some things, like breaking a bad habit, are completely doable.

Let's talk about nail biting. Not only do bitten nails look bad, it is unhealthy! Nasty germs can hide under the nails. When you bite your nails, you increase you chances of getting sick! Here are five of the top tips to stop the biting habit.

5. Wear gloves during your favorite nail biting time. Maybe it's while you are watching TV.

4. Wear a rubber band on your wrist. Snap it when you want to nibble on your nails.

3. Get a manicure regularly to remove that nail and skin roughness that you want to bite!

2. Try painting a bitter potion on your nails such as Jessica Nibble No More http://www.jessicacosmetics.com/miva/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=upt151&Category_Code=Specialty

#1. Keep your nails beautifully polished at all times!

Stiletto Nails with Purple and Gold Chevron Design

stiletto purple and gold chevron nail designs
Q. What are stiletto nails?

A. Stiletto nails are very long almond shaped nails usually decorated with nail art or polished in a funky french manicure style. These nails are created using tips and/or acrylic. It is possible to shape natural nails in the stiletto style if they will grow long and are not too wavy. Rihanna and Lady Gaga love wearing this trend!

Remembering Beautiful Faces

It seems a bit frivolous to talk about beauty tips and trends today after the recent tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary. Let's take the day to remember all the beautiful people who perished. Here is a link to see their beautiful faces.

Here is a link to see President Obama's speech at the Newtown vigil in case you missed it.

May the Lord bless and protect you and your family today and always.

Q&A: Dark Rings from Jewelry

Q. Why does my gold ring leaves a dark ring on my finger?

A. I have read many reasons for this phenomenon. Gold rings contain alloys (other metals) to strengthen the gold. The skin is reacting with the alloys. The dark mark can happen sometimes but not all the time because the skin is always changing. The reasons for the reaction can be:

An acid pH of the skin
Sweat
Hand cream
A medication you are taking

I have read that it can be a sign of an iron deficiency, but I do not know that this is true. Wash your hands and dry them well after sweating. Try changing your hand cream. Clean your ring often. You can also try coating the inside of your ring with nail polish to help stop the reaction.

Alba Acne Wash

Okay, so some of you just couldn't get used to the smell of the last acne wash I suggested which was Yes to Tomatoes.  I have a new one for you to try. It is Alba Botanical Natural Acnedote Deep Pore Wash.

It contains 2% of the acne fighting ingredient salicylic acid, botanical extracts, orange oil and peppermint oil. It contains 100% vegetarian ingredients and, of course, is not tested on animals. Best of all, it smells like refreshing peppermint! So far, it is working to clear our skin and is not causing dryness. Find it at Walmart for $7.49.

Red and Gold Nail Designs

My Christmas nail designs 2012
Add a touch of holiday spirit to your nails!
red and gold holiday nail designs
Red and gold nails are so festive at holiday time. Here are some nail designs created using a variety of nail design materials. I started by polishing all the nails a nice deep red, OPI Vodka and Caviar. It has been discontinued but OPI Malaga Wine or OPI I've Got the Blues for Red would work nicely, too.

The thumb got some gold leafing on top of the red.

The index finger got a gold french tip with an OPI  gold from a holiday collection that is also a discontinued color. China Glaze Electrify could work fabulously!

The middle finger got a gold sticker. I used a regular sticker purchased from AC Moore, applied it to polish that was thoroughly dry, then coated it with several coats of Seche Vite.

The ring finger got a nice coating of gold shimmer polish.

And last, but not least, the pinky got a thin coat of glitter polish.

Sparkle and Shine!

Happy Holidays!

How to do a Smoky Eye

To get a soft smoky look, you will need:
a black pencil
a neutral cream color shadow
a charcoal or black shadow
a medium gray shadow
a light gray shadow
black mascara

1. Line eyes with black pencil. Get right in the lashes. Make the top line heavier than bottom line.

2. Go over the pencil on the top line with charcoal or black eyeshadow for a smudgy look.

3. Apply neutral shadow to brow bone.

4. Apply medium gray shadow to eyelid and under the bottom lashes.

5. Apply light gray to the crease blending it into the medium gray on the eyelid.

6.  Apply 2 coats of mascara to top lashes & 1 coat to bottom lashes.

Voila! Soft & Smoky!

Winter Bridal Makeup at Lucien's Manor

Jill applying makeup
This beautiful December bride had a wintry wedding with a snowflake and navy blue theme. It was a little chilly and cloudy but not too bad though, a good day to get some nice outdoor pics.We arrived in the early afternoon to do the makeup and hair for the bride, her mother and her bridesmaids at the home of the bride.

The brides curly hair was done in a twisted updo. It looked so pretty and shiny! Her veil attached to the back.

For her makeup, I applied highlighter and foundation to create luminous skin. We agreed on soft smoky gray eye with white shimmer shadow to represent shimmering snowflakes, then added black eye liner and black mascara on her long lashes. Lips were a soft nude pink with rosy blush. A light shade of bronzer was lightly dusted on to warm up her complexion and create a subtle contour.

Her wedding venue, Lucien's Manor, was festively decorated for Christmas. It looked so warm and beautiful! The bride captured the shimmering snowflake theme with her white satin gown and her bouquet that sparkled with crystals and decorative snowflakes tucked in among the flowers.

It was a beautiful wedding and they did get some amazing outdoor pictures on the grayish wintry looking day.

Gentlemen prefer blondes....or do they?

Tired of coloring your hair blonde?
According to a study of 2000 men done in the UK by the social network Badoo, 33.1% found brown hair most attractive, 29.5% favored blondes, 28.6% preferred black hair and 8.8% liked redheads best. Even more interesting, 38.8% said their perfect woman would wear a size 12-14. Wow! The study was also done in the US, Brazil, France, Italy and Spain with black being the favorite hair color. Blue eyes were favorite in the UK. The other countries favored brown and green eyes.

Carry on Bag Tips

It's Thanksgiving travel time! I like to travel with carry on luggage. It's saves time and money. Those baggage fees are crazy! The tricky part of traveling with carry on luggage is packing up your toiletries. The TSA allows aerosols, liquids and gels in 3.4 (100ml) ounces sizes or less all packed into a 1 quart zip-top clear plastic bag. This means hairspray, hair gel, foundation, mascara, toothpaste and all other cream or liquid beauty items.

I find many of my beauty products in small bottles. Bed, Bath and Beyond has a whole wall full of travel size toiletries. Another great place to get small bottles is Ulta. I bought a couple 3 oz. bottles of my favorite sunscreen there. Samples come in great little bottles. Rinse them and save them. Those little one ounce bottles are great to refill with foundation. Bigger bottles can be filled with your favorite body lotion. I also save those little zip-top bags that contain extra buttons that come with a new garment. The buttons go into a button box and the little bags can be filled with a cream that you don't need much of while you are away such a eye cream. A little blob of it will last a week. I also use those bags to put pieces of dental floss in.

You can also find some things in packets and towelettes. Check out Pinch Provisions. http://shop.pinchprovisions.com/glitter-minimergency-kit-p66.aspx They have a mini emergency kit that contains little items you may need such as clear nail polish and deodorant towelettes. You can find travel size Advil and Tylenol so leave the big bottles at home.

Pack a mini flat iron and mini curling iron. Your hotel will have a blow dryer. You will need to down size the amount of clothes and shoes you take with you, too. I find we all over pack anyway! Keep everything small and carry it all on! Happy travels!

After Waxing Tip

Do your legs still feel sticky when you get home after a leg wax? Massage away those sticky spots with a little olive oil. Not only does the oil get rid of the sticky remnants of wax, it soothes the skin and reduces inflammation.

Bridal Makeup: A Rustic Autumn Wedding in Lewisberry

rustic autumn mantle decorations
It was a beautiful sunny autumn day with just a slight chill in the air. A perfect day for a wedding with a warm and rustic theme. The wedding was held at The Roundtop Mountain Resort in Lewisberry, Pa. The decor of wood, pine cones, pumpkins, fresh and dried flowers added to the warm, cozy feel of the lodge.

The theme was rustic but the bride had a glamorous flare. For her makeup, she wanted her eyes to be showcased with lots of liner, smokiness and super lashes. I used shades of nude and brown shadow and black liner softened with warm brown shadow to give her some drama. Strip lashes with black mascara gave her the wow lashes she wanted.

Warm rosy blush complemented her complexion and a soft pink lipstick with a shimmer gave her lips some sparkle and shine. I just loved her earring bling!

The lighting and long shadows were simply fabulous during the late afternoon outdoor ceremony.
Look how pretty it was!

Animal Testing Update

Years ago it was difficult to find a cosmetic product that was not tested on animals. You would have to find obscure brands in health food stores or mail order, sometimes from other countries like England. Then things started to change. More and more large companies such as Revlon, Avon, Mary Kay and Estee Lauder stopped animal testing. It was easy to buy a lipstick without worrying if it was tested on animals or not.

I say it was easy because it seems we are going backwards in the animal testing department! I noticed many brands I like, such as Estee Lauder brands, were moved from the no animal testing list to the animal testing list on the Caring Consumer Data Base. I decided to send Estee Lauder an email asking why. These companies usually respond quickly when I write to them but, I have gotten no response, so I did a little research. Apparently, many of the big companies are quietly back to their nasty animal testing policies. Why? Well, it seems they want to sell their products in China. China is one of the few backwards countries the requires that cosmetics be animal tested. Backwards because there are advanced cosmetic testing options that do not involve animals available now. Estee Lauder, MAC, Avon and Mary Kay are now testing on animals again.

Estee Lauder owns many brands including the popular Aveda, Bobbie Brown, Clinique, Flirt, Origins, MAC and Smashbox. Smashbox used to have the cruelty free bunny right on it's website. It's gone, even though they claim in their FAQs that they do not test on animals "unless required by law". I hate that phrase. I guess that means Chinese law! Only Aveda remains on the Caring Consumer not tested on animals list. MAC is on the animal testing list along with Estee Lauder, Avon, Mary Kay and Revlon.

Relvon's email to me states that they ended animal testing in 1989 but, it also says  "Regulatory authorities in a few countries conduct independent testing in order to satisfy their own mandatory registration requirements. Revlon complies with all regulations in the countries in which our products are sold".  Revlon supports non animal testing alternatives, but according to their own statement, animal testing is still being done on their products, maybe not by them directly, but they comply in order to sell their products in other countries. What can you do? Let Revlon, Estee Lauder & MAC know your concerns. Let Avon and Mary Kay know as well.

The other problem that is happening is that large animal testing companies are buying up smaller non animal testing companies. For instance, St. Ives was one of my favorite brands. It is now owned by Unilever and is tested on animals. Check the St. Ives website. It no longer states "not tested on animals". Sometimes a big company buys a smaller company and allows it to run independently. Take Bare Escentuals for example. It is owned by Shiseido, an animal testing company, but it remains not animal tested. You see confusing it is again!

There are still some of my favorite makeup brands that are not tested on animals for sure! Bare Escentuals, E.L.F., Josie Moran, Physician's Formula, Prestige, Stila, Tarte, Too Faced, Urban Decay, Victoria Secret and Wet n Wild. For now, you can buy these brands without worrying! Below is a list of companies that are back to their old tricks along with links to their contact pages. Tell them what you think about animals being tortured for us to look more beautiful!
