Q&A: Pale Nail Beds

Q. My nail beds have a pale look to them. What could be causing it?

A. You could have an iron deficiency. Start by adding more high iron foods to your diet. Some of the usual and some unexpected high iron foods include dried apricots, egg yolks, roasted pumpkin, squash, sesame and sunflower seeds, artichokes, broccoli, sun dried tomatoes, beans, lentils, chick peas, soybeans, fortified cereals, dark leafy greens such as kale, spinach and collard greens. You want to eat a high vitamin C food (such as oranges, strawberries and peppers) with your high iron foods to help your body absorb the iron. Your doctor can do a blood test to find out if the problem is an iron deficiency or if the cause is some other problem.
