New Year's Resolutions for your Skin: Updated

Another year is in the books. Time to look forward to the start of a fresh new year, make new goals and try to fix some bad habits! I have added some more great products to this post to help you get better skin.

A few years ago, in the Philadelphia area, we woke up to a fresh blanket of snow to finish our year. It was quite fitting for the end of the year and the beginning of a new one. It's like a white canvas ready to be painted or a blank page ready to be written on.

I always make New Year's resolutions. They are usually the same every year...to be more organized and to make more money! I will use those old resolutions once again and add more this year including better hydration.

Water is so important for our body and skin. I find I drink a lot of water in the summer but not so much in the winter. Time to make a change. There are lots of other easy small changes you can make in your daily routine to improve the look and health of your skin.

I have 5 Easy New Year's Resolutions for better skin.

I have included my Amazon Affiliate links in this post to help you find great deals on things I use. I earn a small amount from qualifying purchases at no cost to you. Thank you for using them! 💕

New Year's Resolution 1: More Hydration

We need water to live. Our bodies contain a good percentage of water.  The average adult body is 50-60% water. We need water to build healthy cells, carry nutrients to the cells, regulate body temperature, metabolize food, dissolve nutrients, vitamins, minerals, keep organs and joints insulated and lubricated and remove wastes.

More water means healthier, younger looking skin cells. It is recommended that we drink eight 8 oz. glasses of water each day, which equals about 2 liters or a 1/2 gallon. Most of don't drink enough water or we drink beverages such as wine and coffee. Alcohol and caffeine dehydrate.

It is trendy to carry a water bottle whereever you go anyway so get a great one. I like stainless steel water bottles.

They don't break and there are no worries of chemicals that can be in plastic water bottles plus, they come in a vast array of fun colors and patterns.

Drinking more water is an easy change to make for the new year.

Maybe you need a little more encouragement getting all the water you need.

In that case, try a motivational water bottle. A motivational water bottle helps you track your water intake throughout the day with time markers right on the water bottle. Many of them come in fun bright colors and are made BPA free plastic. That will help you get that water in!

New Year's Resolution 2: Moisturize Your Body

Now that we will be drinking more water, we need to seal it in to keep it from evaporating from our skin. That's the job of a good moisturizer. A moisturizer puts a protective barrier on your skin to prevent water evaporation from the skin into the air.

The 3 Minute Rule:
The best time to apply moisturizer is after a short warm shower. Pat the skin dry and apply your moisturizer within 3 minutes to seal water in before it evaporates from your skin.

Use a lotion or cream that you like the smell and feel of. Hempz products are a great choice.

We have used some Hempz Pure Herbal Extracts Moisturizers at the salon and find them to be very emollient. Hempz washes, scrubs and moisturizers feel great on the skin and really help the skin feel less dry. They are vegan, cruelty free, paraben free and gluten free.

Adding a big bottle of moisturizer to your bathroom is another easy change to make for the new year.

Need to firm up your skin while you moisturize?

Try Goldbond Age Renew Strength and Resilience Body Firming Lotion. It contains proteins and lipids that really help the skin feel more hydrated and a little firmer.  I love it!

I have added a bottle of Goldbond Strength and Resilience Body Firming Lotion to my bathroom, in fact, I keep it on the ledge of my bathtub so I can dry off staying all warm behind the shower curtain and get the lotion applied well within the recommended 3-minute time frame. It's great!!!

New Year's Resolution 3: Eat less Sugar

This is something I have been doing for a few years now. Sugar can cause aging inflammation due to a bodily process called glycation.

I read labels and avoid products that have a lot of added sugar. I also limit the number of sweets I eat which is no easy feat because of the little baker I have at my house always making delicious cookies, cinnamon rolls and other yummy baked goods! Moderation is the key.

There are easy ways to cut sugar in your diet.

Drink seltzer with a splash of fruit juice and a lemon or lime slice instead of soda.

Eat low sugar yogurt and cereals.

Add less sugar to your tea or coffee or skip it all together. A splash of vanilla extract will add a sweet taste without adding sugar.

Eat whole grain pasta instead of white pasta.

Eat one cookie instead of two! 🍪 You will have better skin and quickly drop a few pounds as a bonus!

New Year's Resolution 4: Increase Vitamin C

Vitamin C is essential for the growth, development and repair of the tissues of the body which, of course, includes the skin. It is necessary for the creation of collagen in the skin.

Collagen keeps our skin firm and younger looking. Vitamin C supports our immune system and helps skin injuries and breakouts heal quicker. Vitamin C also allows the oil glands to make oil to condition the scalp and hair.

Eat lots of citrus fruits, strawberries, kiwi fruit, papayas, guavas, cantaloupe, tomatoes, bell peppers, dark leafy greens, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, fresh thyme and parsley.

It is also very easy to take Vitamin C each day. I like to take 500 mg each day, but I don't always do it. Vitamin C is available in pill form, chewable tablets and gummies, even vegetarian gummies! Vitamin C can contain sugar when not in pill form, though. Check the ingredient list.

New Year's Resolution 5: Enhance Night Repair

Getting the proper amount of sleep can be challenging for night owls. I tend to get creative energy at night which prevents me from going to bed early. Then, I hear every noise in the house, get too hot or my husband, the early bird, wakes me up too early so I don't get a good night's sleep.

But, sleep is essential for our health. I think way too many of us don't get enough rejuvenating sleep.

We have to make some changes for the new year. Maybe some ASMR will help you relax. ASMR is autonomous sensory meridian response, a relaxing tingly feeling many people get from hearing certain sounds.

Click here to see an ASMR video.

While we sleep, our body is removing toxins, building elastic fibers that support the skin and revitalizing skin cells. The body rejuvenates and repairs cell damage. We simply must have sleep to allow the body to do its restoration. Try for at least 7 hours of sleep each night.

Help the skin repair it's self while you sleep by using a cream at night that contains healing regenerating ingredients:

Retinol- to stimulate the cells to make collagen.
Hyaluronic Acid- to moisturize and plump up the skin.
Anti-Oxidants- to fight free radical damage.

We can make all of these little changes and be able to stick to them because they are simple & uncomplicated changes. If I can do it, you can do it too!  Being more organized and making more money is another story!

White Bumps Under Eyes: Milia

Have you noticed that you have little white looking bumps under your eyes? Some people call it chicken skin because the bumps look like plucked chicken skin. 🐔 Most likely those little white bumps are milia. They can feel hard or pearly. These bumps are not acne. Milia can occur when dead skin cells become trapped beneath the outer layer of skin. Keratin becomes trapped and builds up. A small benign cyst can form which is the milia. It's a cyst!?! Don't let that word scare you. They are harmless, but unwanted bumps.  They can occur on any area of the skin that tends to be on the dry side. They cannot be squeezed out like a blackhead or pimple because they have no opening. A layer of skin covers them. A hole must be created in them using a needle, then they can be extracted out. Read more about blackhead, whiteheads and blind pimples This is a common problem for the under-eye area. It is a dry, delicate area of the skin. I see it a lot on my clients. Heavy products

Dermatofibromas

This post is all about dermatofibromas and some remedies to help make them look better and ways hide them. It includes my Amazon Affiliate Links to help you find the products I talk about. Q. I have this brown bump on my leg that won't go away. What can I do about it? A. It could be a dermatofibroma. I see them often on my leg waxing clients. A dermatofibroma is a tan to brown benign raised bump more common in women than men and occur commonly on the legs. The bump feels hard under the skin and can be itchy, tender and easily irritated. A doctor will tell you not to worry about it because it's benign, but it's kind of ugly! Dermatofibromas are also called Benign Fibrous Histiocytomas. They are the result of some sort of injury to the skin such as an ingrown hair or a bug bite.  Be careful when shaving because a dermatofibroma may bleed and become sore if nicked. Don't think you can get rid of it by shaving it off. It will be an awful looking sore and will j

Dermatofibroma on Leg

A Dermatofibroma is an unsightly brown or red bump that is very common on the legs. They are also called Benign Fibrous Histiocytomas and are more common in women than men. They can hurt, itch and become inflamed easily. They are the result of some sort of injury to the skin such as an ingrown hair or a bug bite.  I have tried lots of home remedies on my dermatofibroma. Some help it look better than others but the ugly thing is still there! Read more about dermatofibroma remedies. There is only one way to remove it for good...surgery. It must be surgically excised out. A dermatofibroma goes deep into the skin. It will only grow back if it is cut off of the skin at surface level. The problem with the removal is it leaves a long scar that is about 2 inches or so long. It has to be done that way to be able to sew the skin back together so it is smooth and not puckery. Here is a picture of a scar from the removal of a dermatofibroma. This scar was also treated with a laser to imp
