Earth Day 2016

It's Earth Day. This my Earth Day post from last year. It's worth reposting. Please read it and do a little something to help Mother Earth today.

There are special guidelines when throwing away paint to prevent contamination of soil and water sources. For instance, a can latex paint needs to be a solid, not liquid, to be thrown in the trash. The paint can should be opened to allow the liquid to evaporate. The can is okay to put in the trash when the paint is dried.

We don't think about it, but nail polish is paint. Most of us just toss an old unwanted bottle of nail polish in the trash. This creates the possibility of contamination of soil and water if the bottle is broken in a landfill.

How to dispose of old nail polish:

1. Pour the polish out of the bottle on to a paper towel and let it dry.

2. Leave the top off of the polish bottle to allow the polish remnants to harden.

3. Once the polish is all dry, the paper towel and polish bottle can be tossed safely in the trash.

Here are more little things you can do that make a big difference.

1. Take a shorter shower

2. Pack your lunch in a reusable container

3. Use a refillable water bottle instead of disposables

4.Take a travel cup to fill at your favorite coffee shop

5. Turn lights off that are not needed

6. Turn your computer off when not in use

7. Turn the water off while you brush your teeth

8. Use a cloth dish towel instead of a paper towel

9. Start some tomato seeds for your garden

10. Take a reusable shopping bag to the store

11. Wash your clothes in cold water

12. Eat something organic

Help keep our environment clean and healthy today and everyday!
