Illegal Callus Razors and Pedicures

Did you know that razor callus shavers used by some salons during a pedicure to remove calluses are illegal in most states? Why? Removal of calluses by cutting is considered to be a medical procedure to be performed by a doctor. The problem with salons using them is the razor, most likely, is not sterilized. A little cut can become a big problem if a germ gets in there.  Blades are illegal in all states in the US except Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Maine, Missouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and West Virginia. Salons and spas are permitted to use foot files, pumices, foot peels and scrubs to smooth and reduce calluses. Q&A: Face Primer

Q. Should I use a primer before I put on my foundation? A.  It depends on your skin. Some people benefit more from primer than others. Some can just use a moisturizer as a primer.  A face primer will help hide imperfections in your skin so your foundation goes on smoother.  Older skin that has more imperfections than young skin benefits most from a face primer. Also, anyone who has acne scarring. A silicone based face primer puts a film over your skin. This film floats on top of of skin helping to hide large pores, shallow scars and small lines.  There are also tinted primers designed to conceal imperfections such as redness. Some primers provide oil control allowing foundation to look fresher longer.  The foundation applied over any face primer gives you that flawless finish. BB & CC creams are great face primers.            Have a Beautiful Day!  xo Jill Licensed Cosmetologist,  Esthetician,  Makeu...

Do we need to take vitamins?

We love to take our vitamin supplements! Many people think of supplements as magic pills that give us better health and more energy.  We need vitamins for our health that's for sure.  But, do we actually need to take vitamin supplements to be healthier or can we get the vitamins we need from the foods we eat? So many questions!  What do doctors say about taking vitamin supplements? ABC News asked doctors if taking vitamin supplements is necessary. The doctors asked agreed that no supplements are needed, with the exception of Folic Acid, Vitamin D and Calcium for some people.  Dr. Donald Hensrud, an associate professor of preventative medicine and nutrition at the Mayo Clinic said, "For most dietary supplements, there is not a lot of evidence they improve health, including multivitamins." Not enough evidence. That's interesting. Doctors recommend eating a healthy, balanced diet full of fruits and vegetables to get the nutrients your body needs to...

Did you know Sunscreen Expires?

Do you have some old sunscreen in your closet? It may no longer be effective if it is old. Sunscreen can actually expire. Some bottles have expiration dates printed on them, some do not.  Sunscreen looses it potency after a year, especially if the bottle was exposed to sunlight in your beach bag, leaving you less protected from damaging UV rays.  Toss your old sunscreen and buy new. I like to write the date on the bottom of the bottle with a sharpie when I buy it. That way when I find a stray bottle I know if it should be tossed. Where to Apply Bronzer: Specific Areas or All Over

Q. Summer is coming and I need to add some color to my pale skin! Where should I apply bronzer for a sun kissed look? A. Bronzer is a great way to add quick color to your skin.  A bronzer can be applied to specific areas of the face or it can be lightly dusted all over the face depending on the look you want.  Powder bronzer is easy to work with because it is easily blended and there is a wide variety of shades to choose from. How to apply bronzer to specific areas A bronzer applied to specific areas of the face creates depth and a contouring effect. There is contrast between the bronzed area and the natural skin color. Apply bronzer that is one or two shades darker than your skin color to areas of the face that get the most sunlight, the nose, the cheeks, the chin and center of the forehead, to mimic a natural sun kissed look. Always blend it well in circular motions with your brush. Apply all over  color You can also dust bronzer all over your face to creat...
