2015 Miss Universe Makeup and Hair

I had to watch it. I always do. The Miss Universe Pageant. I love the hair, the makeup and my very favorite, the evening gowns! The hair, for most of the women, was long with soft curls. The usual. Miss Jamaica, Kaci Fennell, was the exception to the rule with her super cute short do.

The makeup, for most of the women, consisted of matte yet luminous skin, soft blush, bold eyebrows, neutral eye shadow, dark liner, long lashes and glossy, glossy lips, a pink nude or a peach nude. Beautiful. Not over done.

Look at the little bit of glitter on Miss Ukraine's, Diana Harkusha, face. It makes me not feel so bad about getting a little glitter fallout on my own face:)

The gowns were gorgeous! Lots of red and white.

Look at Miss USA's, Nia Sanchez, fabulous red dress! She is the last one on the right.
I just loved the sexy back of Miss Jamaica's dress!

The winner? Miss Columbia, Paulina Vega. A dark haired beauty. But, the audience clearly wanted Miss Jamaica to win. I was rooting for her myself! I was quite surprised that she was the last runner up.
Last year, it was Venezuela, Gabriela Isler, who won. Another dark haired beauty.

Here she is this year before she crowned the new Miss Universe. Heavy dark lashes and red lips. Old Hollywood glamour style.
Geez, I better go peel my skin, apply a mask, whiten my teeth, put on lots of night cream and go to bed early!

Have a beautiful Day!

The 3 Minute Moisturizing Rule

Did you know there is a rule when it comes to applying your moisturizer?

Experts say, your face and body moisturizer should be applied within 3 minutes after showering or washing your face. The top layers of the skin absorb water while showering. Moisturizer seals in that water keeping the skin hydrated. Pat your skin dry after showering or cleansing your face then lotion up.

OPI Avojuice New Packaging

OPI has repackaged their Avojuice Hand and Body Lotion.

The new packaging looks nice. It now says 24 hour moisture and the bottle is bigger. It was 6.6 fl. oz. Now it is 8.5 fl oz. This is a product we have always loved in the salon, perfect for manicures. It had a light fragrance and was not sticky or greasy when doing a hand massage during a manicure and it didn't leave a heavy film on the nails.

Many times when a manufacturer changes their packaging, they also change their ingredients. So I took a look at the ingredient lists and compared the Coconut Melon ingredients.

Old packaging, OPI Avojuice Coconut Melon ingredients: water, propylene glycol, dimethicone, cetearyl alcohol, behentrimonium methosulphate, fragrance, phenoxyethanol, caprylyl glycol, poly quaternium-37, allentoin, potassium sorbate, propelene glycol, dicaprylate/dicaprate, benzophenone-4, hexylene glycol, coumarin, benzyl alcohol, PPG-1, trideceth-6, persa gratissima (avocado) oil, tocopheryl acetate, aloe barbadenis leaf extract, isopropyl palmitate, linalool, cocos nucifera (coconut) fruit extract, cucumis melo (melon) fruit extract, CI 19140  (yellow 5)

New packaging, OPI Avojuice Coconut Melon ingredients: water, glycerin, dimethicone, propylene glycol,  cetearyl alcohol, paraffinum liquidum, caprylic/ capric triglyceride, poly quaternium-37, behentrimonium methosulphate, propelene glycol, dicaprylate/dicaprate, phenoxyethanol, caprylyl glycol,  fragrance, allentoin, persa gratissima (avocado) oil, PPG-1, trideceth-6, glycine soja (soybean) sterols, linoleic acid, phospholipids, potassium sorbate,  benzophenone-4, tocopheryl acetate, hexylene glycol, aloe barbadenis leaf extract, coumarin, benzyl alcohol, isopropyl palmitate, linalool,  CI 19140  (yellow 5)

The most noticeable changes are, they added glycerin, paraffin, soybean sterols, linoleic acid (a fatty acid), phospholipids (also fatty acid).

They took out coconut extract and melon extract.

The ingredient change looks good for the skin. It may make too much film on the nails for us when doing manicures though. We will see as we use it. It feels like it takes longer to rub in. It still smells nice.

Your fragrance choices are:

Vanilla Lavender
Sweet Lemon Sage
Violet Orchid
Peony Poppy
Coconut Melon
Mango
Cran & Berry
Ginger Lily
Jasmine

It also went from $7.95 to $9.50. You are getting more product with the new packaging, though.

Find OPI Avojuice at salons and at Ulta.

Dry, Brittle Nails that Snap Off!

Help! My nails are just snapping off! I went grocery shopping and came home with two broken nails. What's happening to my nails?

Your nails are probably dry and brittle from the dry winter air. Outside the air is dry with low humidity and inside the air is dry with low humidity from the heater. This lack of humidity will cause the nails and skin to become dehydrated.

You need to oil up! Use hand lotion and nail/cuticle oil on your nails several times a day to keep the nails moist and flexible. Oil creates a protective barrier against dry air.

Too much water exposure is the enemy for nails. It will make the nails flatten when wet then curl when dry causing the nails to become brittle. Wear waterproof gloves to protect your nails (and hands too!) from exposure to water when cleaning or doing dishes.

Wear warm winter gloves when you are outside.

Biotin is a key vitamin for healthy nail formation. Eat more foods containing biotin to help your body make strong healthy nails.

Josie Maran Argan Illuminizer

My skin has that dull winter look about it. So I headed to Sephora to pick up a bottle of Josie Maran Argan Illuminizer.
Josie Maran illumiinzer
I just love a luminizer to add life to the skin. It brightens, highlights and helps blur away flaws. You can use it alone as a highlighter and apply it to specific areas, such as the tops of your cheek bones, on your brow bones, on bridge of your nose and your cupid's bow, or add a drop to your foundation to give your face an all over glow. I use it both ways depending on my mood and the look I want to create.

Here is what it looks like by it's self. A gorgeous shimmering golden bronze.
Josie Maran illumiinzer on skin
It creates a beautiful golden glow with a little sparkle. There is less sparkle when it is mix with foundation. Many Josie Maran products contain Argan oil. It's a fabulous anti aging ingredient full of Vitamin E and fatty acids to beautify the skin.

Note: Since I wrote this post, this product has been replaced with Josie Maran Argan Enlightenment Illuminizer. It gives your skin a beautiful champagne shimmer. A 15 ml, 0.5 fl oz. bottle is $26.00.

INGREDIENTS: Aqua (Water)**, Glycerin**, Tricaprylin, Butylene Glycol, Stearic Acid**, Pentaerythrityl Tetraethylhexanoate, Steareth-20, Dimethicone, Argania Spinosa (Argan) Kernel Oil*, Acrylates/Palmeth-25 Acrylate Copolymer, VP/Eicosene Copolymer, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Phenyl Trimethicone, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil**, Sodium Hydroxide, Xanthan Gum**, Ethylhexylglycerin, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Mica (CI 77019)**, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891)**, Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499)**, Narcissus Poeticus (Narcissus) Extract**, Lilium Candidum (Madonna Lily) Bulb Extract**

How to use Clear Brow Gel to Tame and Smooth Eyebrows

Eyebrows can get wild and crazy. Hairs grow downward, long wiry hairs show up or the hairs just look messy. It may be how they grow or your brows can look messy if you are a side or stomach sleeper from your pillow.
My favorite product to tame them is clear brow gel. It looks like clear mascara. It is great for holding brow hairs in place. It also gives the hairs a healthy shine and makes them look slightly darker. Here is an eyebrow before grooming and after grooming. I used powder brow color to fill in the brows and clear brow gel to set the hairs in place.
There are many clear brow gels available.
Blinc also makes a clear Eyebrow Mousse for $24. Find it at Sephora.
Laura Geller has one. Define and Tame Brow Perfecting Gel for $24. I am not a big fan of the applicator. It is a click-pen instead of a traditional mascara tube. Find it at Ulta if you want to check it out.
Anastasia makes a clear brow gel. You can find it at Ulta and Sephora for about $22.
If you are not into spending that much money, Amazing Cosmetics makes Brow Gel-Lash Primer $14 at Ulta. It can be also used on lashes alone or as a primer for mascara. I have not tried it.
Prestige Cosmetics make a nice brow gel for $6.49 at Ulta.
Also, NYX has a good one for $5.99 at Ulta. I always love NYX.
For the ultimate beauty bargain, there is e.l.f. Essential Wet Gloss Lash and Brow Clear Mascara for just $1!!!! Find e.l.f. products at Target and www.eyeslipsface.com.
I also like Brow Set made by Your Name Cosmetics. I think it has a nice strong hold. You can find Your Name Cosmetics at salons. It maybe hard to find because it is a private label brand which means a salon can put their own label on it.
There are more brow gels out there. These are brands that do not tested on animals.

You can also get tinted brow gel to hide gray brows hairs. To name a few, Anastasia has 6 colors available. Blinc has 8 colors. Choose a color that is close to your natural hair color only a bit lighter. I always lean to the clear gels. They seem to feel softer and smoother on the brows. Grays can be covered with brow color before application of the gel.
You got the gel, let's use it!
How to Tame and Smooth your Eyebrows
1. Tweeze long wiry hairs or trim them a little.....not too short or they will stick out.

2. Wet your brows with warm water. Try holding a warm wash cloth on your brows for a minute or two. This will soften the hairs and make them easier to put in place.
3. Comb the wet brows into place with a brow comb/brush. Let them dry.

4. Add some powder brow color to define your shape, fill in holes and cover grays. A matte eye shadow also works great. Choose a color close to your natural color only a bit lighter to avoid a heavy dark brow look. Here is an example of powder brow color. Urban Decay's Brow Box.

5. Apply clear brow gel to hold the hairs in place. Pull the wand out of the tube and wipe excess on the opening of the tube to avoid applying too much gel to your brows. Direct the hairs upwards, then push the hairs in place with long strokes working towards the end of the brow. Let the gel dry. That's it.

Your brows with stay tamed and in place all day!

Out with the Old Makeup

old makeup
January, the new year, is a good time to clean out that old makeup.  Some cosmetics have a longer shelf life than others.  Toss cosmetics that have passed their shelf life and buy new.

Opened Makeup Shelf Life

Mascara: 3 months
Cream Blush and Cream Eye Shadows: 6 months
Concealer: 12 months
Liquid Foundation: 12 months
Lipstick: 12-18 months
Lip and Eye Pencil: 3 years (sharpened regularly)
Powder Shadows and Face Powders: 2-3 years

Always use clean brushes and applicators when dipping into your cosmetics.

Start your year with healthy clean makeup!

Have a Beautiful Day!
