Feathery Brows and Brow Gel

dramatic brow
Eyebrows have been very bold, thick, filled in, defined, arched, and clean in recent years. Many people actually use a brow stencil to get the well defined symmetrical look. Those clean bold brows work well with dramatic makeup but require time at the makeup mirror and are not casual or natural looking.

In case you haven't noticed, we have had a bohemian hippie influence that has been trending for the past few years with flowy dresses and tops reminiscent of the 60's and 70's. Those stenciled sculpted brows just don't jive with the free and easy bohemian style.

A softer, more natural look is needed for a proper boho look. Try the softer feathery brow look.

feathered brow
The brows are still thicker and softly arched but they don't have a hard clean stenciled line. Visible hairs soften the line. I want to call them stray hairs, but they are more like controlled strays that soften the edges of the brows.

The brow hairs are brushed up to get a soft feathery look. The brushed up brow look was popular back in the 80's, you know, that thick, wild Brooke Shield brow look. The brushed up look today is much cleaner and more controlled than the Brooke Shield's look from back in the day.

How to Get the Feathered Brow Look

Brush up  & Clean up

Start by brushing your brows upwards.
feathered brow brushing
You can use a brow brush or a mascara spoolie to brush the hairs up. Tweeze out any wild strays that are way out of the brow line.

Smooth a bit
Now use the brow brush or spoolie to smooth the hairs over a bit so they are not super straight up. Keep the inner, thicker half of the brow brushed up more than the outer half.
feathered brow brushing

Fill in
Use a sharp brow pencil that is close to or slightly darker than your natural brow hair color. Make fine hair like strokes. Follow the shape you created when you smoothed the brow a bit in the previous step. Don't fill the brows in completely. Leave little spaces for a softer natural look.

brow pencil

Gel it
Apply brow gel to hold the hairs in place and give the brow hairs a healthy looking sheen. You can use a clear brow gel or a colored brow gel for bolder color and to cover gray hair. Don't be tempted to pull out your gray eyebrow hairs. You will make your brows look too sparse.

Brow Gels to Try:

Try Anastasia Clear Brow Gel if you would like to use a good clear brow gel.

Tart Busy Gal Brows Tinted Brow Gel if you would like a good tinted brow gel.

A tinted brow gel is the best for really coating and hiding any gray eyebrow hairs. It's also great if you feel your brow hairs are just too light or you want to make your brows look fuller without using a brow pencil. You can match your hair color or go slightly darker than your hair color.

Both of these brow gels are packaged like mascara in a tube of the product with an applicator brush wand.

I find both of these gels go on smoothly. They dry with no hard or sticky feeling. They both hold up well through the day with no flaking. They also remove easily with facial cleanser and water.

Use only a thin layer of the Anastasia Clear Brow Gel. I find using too much causes the brow hairs to stick together and look unnatural.

The Tarte Busy Gal Brows Tinted Brow Gel is buildable which means you can built up the color and coverage with multiple coats. It will also color the skin if you want a more filled in look. It doesn't cause the brow hairs to stick together when you add more coats.

That's all there is to it. Soft and easy feathery brows.

feathered brow
My brows are a littler thinner than I want them to be. Brows tend to get thinner as we age due to hormone and thyroid changes. Thicker brows are more the style but you can get the brushed up feathery look even if your brows are thinner like mine.

Some people have had success stimulating more brow hairs to grow by using a brow serum or just simple castor oil.

Apply GrandeBrow Brow Enhancing Serum or Organic Castor Oil the skin under your eyebrows once a day at bedtime. It will take several months to see an improvement so you have to be patient.

Are you afraid you will mess up your brows reshaping them? See me at Styling Point in Media, Pa for a brow shaping.

Lotion YonKa, It's a toner.

Let's talk about one of my favorite skin care products,

 Lotion YonKa. ๐Ÿ’–

It's literally a magic potion!!!

I'll tell you all about it and give you some of my Amazon Affiliate links so you can do some shopping.
Yon Ka lotion
It's not a lotion at all. It is an alcohol free healing mist used as a toner after cleansing your face. Spray it on after cleansing your face and lightly massage or pat it in. Apply your moisturizer right over it. The smell is divine! Clean and fresh, not perfumy. It is extremely soothing and balances skin conditions.

There are two formulas, one for normal to oily skin or combination skin (it's white) and one for dry and sensitive skin (it's pink).

Both contain YonKa's signature blend of essential oils which are lavender, geranium, rosemary, cypress and thyme.

Essential oils are oils extracted by distillation or cold pressing from various parts of a plant, the leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots, seeds or peels. The oils are aromatic and retain the chemical composition of the plant. The healing plant chemicals in the oils have various properties such as, anti inflammatory, anti oxidant, and anti bacterial.

Essential oils are used in many cosmetic products and are often used for massage. Oily skin people, don't be afraid that the essential oils will make you more oily. They won't. Some have astringent properties that actually help control oil.

Let's look at some of the properties of the oils in Lotion YonKa to see why the product is so healing and balancing.

All of the essential oils listed are healing.

Lavender- reviving, regenerative, soothing, anti microbial
Lavender is excellent for healing burns.

Geranium- anti inflammatory, antiseptic, regenerative

Rosemary- antiseptic, antimicrobial, regenerative

Cypress- tonic, astringent, antiseptic

Cypress is great for oily skin.

Thyme- anti microbial, antiseptic, stimulates circulation
There are many other ways to use Lotion YonKa besides using it as a toner:

Freshen your skin

Freshen your face throughout the day to remove excess oil or add moisture. Oily skin: mist your face and pat it dry with cotton or a tissue to blot  away excess oil. Dry skin: mist your face and let it air dry.

Set your makeup

Give your freshly applied makeup a quick mist to set your it and give it a dewy look. Use either formula according to your skin type.

Freshen makeup

Freshen up makeup that has gotten dry looking after hours of wear with a quick mist. Use either formula according to your skin type.

Use it on sunburn

Spray YonKa Lotion directly on the sunburn or spray it on a cotton pad to use as a compress. Either formula is beneficial but the glycerin in the sensitive formula maybe extra beneficial for sunburn treatment. Apply repeatedly throughout the day.

Spray it on bug bites and stings

The healing soothing properties of YonKa Lotion are perfect to soothe, speed healing and reduce itch. You can also make a Lotion compress for bug bites. Spray the Lotion on a cotton pad and apply to the bite or sting. Use either formula for insect bites and stings. I prefer the oily skin formula for bug bites due to the slightly higher concentration of essential oils.

Use it to soothe skin irritations

You can spray it or make a compress to sooth rashes, eczema and other skin irritations. Use either formula according to your skin type.

I always look forward to the next season's nail polish colors and am excited to open my box of Zoya nail polish when it arrives on my doorstep. Once again, Zoya has created another sensational collection of nail colors for the 2019 fall season.

It is the Sensual Collection.

There is a nice variety of 12 rich pigmented colors in cream, metallic and glitter finishes from soft pink to deep shimmering gray. The richness of the colors represents well the rich warm colors of autumn and truly gratifies the senses.

The Nail Trends for Fall
Colors
Purples and blues remain trendy for fall 2019 along with nudes, neutrals, reds and glitter. We love our glitter!๐Ÿ’œ
Zoya is right on trend as usual!

Artsy Style

Nails polished in ombre using deep colors and half moons boldly polished or decked out in glitter continue to be all the rage. An emerging nail art trend is letters painted on the nails. It can be as simple as your initial on one nail or it can be an actual word spelled out on the nails.

Nail Shape
Shape your short or medium length nails in a round or classic oval shape. Shape your long nails in a more pointed almond, coffin or stiletto shape. My favorite squoval shape isn't the in trend but I still like it anyway!

Natural Mosquito Repellents & Mosquito Bite Remedy

My daughter just returned from a lovely vacation in Topsail Island, North Carolina. It looks so serene and that water is so gorgeous with hints of turquoise blue.

Topsail Island, NC

It reminds a little bit of the water in the Caribbean and my favorite vacation place Jamaica where the water is aqua, turquoise and deep blue green.

She said it was wonderful except for all nasty the mosquitoes. They were really biting!
mosquito
They were biting during the day around the pool and were even worse in the evening which was quite inconvenient when it was time for them to make s'mores!

Not only do mosquitoes cause those itchy bite welts that we are all familiar with, they can carry diseases including West Nile Virus and the Zika Virus.

Some people are allergic to the proteins in the mosquito saliva and have a severe reaction which creates large red swollen areas that are hot to the touch and take a long time to heal. I remember one time in Sea Isle City, NJ, my little nephew was actually so disfigured, from the mosquito bites he got on his face, that people passing by stared at him like something was seriously wrong with him.

We have to take precautions spending time outside when there are biting mosquitoes. I don't know about you, but I hate spraying chemicals like DEET on my skin and worry about putting DEET on children. I know products like OFF! work, but I'm a bit paranoid about certain chemicals. I like to take a more natural approach when ever possible.

I'm also paranoid about companies, such as Mosquito Shield, who spray entire properties with undisclosed chemicals. I recently received some great new info about Mosquito Shield's chemicals and added what I learned to my Mosquito Shield post.

Read: Are the Mosquito Shield chemicals safe?

Let's look at some safer natural ways to repel mosquitoes.

Natural Ways to help keep the Mosquitoes away.

Essential Oils

Apply lavender essential oil to your pulse points. Lavender is one of my favorite soothing, healing, multi purpose essential oils that is safe to use undiluted on the skin.

Other mosquito repelling essential oils are Basil, Cedarwood, Citronella, Juniper, Lemon, Myrrh, Palmarosa, Pine, Geranium and Rosemary. A few drops of any of these oils need to be diluted in water or a carrier oil (olive oil, almond oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, etc.) before applying to the skin.

Mix up a little essential oil concoction to repel them! Here are some easy recipes:

Recipe #1
Combine in a 16 oz spray bottle:
15 drops of lavender essential oil
3-4 tablespoons vanilla extract
10 drops of lemon eucalypus oil
1/4 cup lemon juice
Fill the bottle with water and shake well.

Recipe #2
Combine in a 16 oz spray bottle:
15 drops of lavender oil
3-4 tablespoons vanilla extract
Fill the bottle with water and shake well.

Recipe #3
Combine in a 16 oz spray bottle:
15 drops of lavender oil
3-4 tablespoons vanilla extract
1/4 cup lemon juice
Fill the bottle with water and shake well.

Check your Clothes
Wear light colored clothing. Mosquitoes are attracted to dark colors. I always forget which they are attracted to light or dark, so I think mosquitoes come out more at night when it's dark!

Burn a candle
Light a candle but don't put it near you. The carbon dioxide it gives off will attract mosquitoes away from you.

Blow them Away
Have a fan blowing near you. If the mosquito can't land on you due to the breeze, it can't bite you. This works great! I was outside on a friend's patio and there was a fan blowing. I got no mosquito bites that night!

More Topical Remedies
Put Listerine in a spray bottle and spray it around you and/or on you.

Mix a 50/50 ratio of Listerine and vinegar in a spray bottle and spray it on you and/or around you.

Apply a little Vicks Vaporub.

Apply vanilla extract to the pulse points.

There are some commercial, cruelty free, natural repellents that you can try.

All Terrain Herbal Armor. This DEET free natural repellent contains 6 oils that repel  insects. There is a great kids specific spray.

Jason Quit Bugging Me. This repellent contains Geranium, Soybean and Coconut oils.

Burt's Bees Herbal Insect Repellent contains Rosemary, Lemongrass, Cedar, Peppermint, Citronella, Clove and Geranium oils to repel.

Mosquito Bite Remedy
So you tried to repel them but they bit you anyway!

My favorite remedy for a mosquito bite is a facial mask containing mud and/or clay. Apply a thick layer of mask to a new bite. It seems to lessen the allergic reaction. I feel the clay or mud draws out some of the mosquito saliva and it helps calm the histamine reaction. Carry one with you in your bag when you are outside and apply it as soon as you are bitten. I find it really helps!

My favorite YonKa Masque 105 contains three types of clay, montmorillonite, bentonite and kaolin along with castor oil and the healing essential oils lavender, rosemary, thyme, geranium and cypress to help calm and heal the bite faster.

This works great on wasp and bees stings as well! Read about my wasp sting!

You can also try Bug Bite Thing that was seen on Shark Tank to remove bug bite venom from the skin. It's a suction device to draw out the venom.
