Why is mineral makeup itchy and irritating?

Loose powder mineral foundation is touted as being a safe, natural makeup with minimal natural ingredients that is perfect for sensitive skin. Not for my sensitive skin!!! Many loose powder mineral makeup brands irritate my skin and make it itch like crazy! My skin has reacted terribly to Bare Minerals and Youngblood loose powder mineral foundations. There are many people who use both of these brands with no problems at all and truly love them. We carry Youngblood makeup at the salon and our clients rave over the loose mineral foundation. It makes my skin itch and it has an occlusive feeling on my face. I can't wait to wash it off! It's the same reaction I have to the Bare Minerals powder foundation. Using mineral powder foundation is a quick and easy way make your skin look great. It gives you decent coverage with just a little of the product as you swirl it on with a kabuli brush or powder brush. It has a barely there feel, if you are not sensitive to it. It is especi...

Is Talc a Dangerous Cosmetic Ingredient to Avoid?

Are there ingredients in your skin care, hair care and makeup products that are cancer causing? Take a look at one of your beautiful eye shadow palettes or maybe your face powder or powder blush. Go ahead take a look. Do you see talc?  Most likely, it's listed right near the beginning of the ingredient list which means there is a significant amount in the product.  Remember the Johnson and Johnson talcum powder lawsuits and that it was then recommended that women should stop using body powder's containing talc because women were getting ovarian cancer linked to talc?  We switched to cornstarch powder years ago at the salon when we do bikini waxing and body waxing for the safety of our clients. What is Talc? Talc is a clay mineral composed mainly of magnesium, silicon and oxygen that is mined from the earth.  Sound safe right?  It absorbs moisture and oil, has a soft silky feel, makes makeup products opaque and has anti caking properties.   So ...

Warm Eyeshadow Palette: Tarte Maneater Eyeshadow Palette

Tarte is one of my favorite makeup brands. Why?  Well, there are lots of reasons. It's a favorite of mine because it's a natural makeup that contains ingredients, such as vitamins, minerals and plant extracts, that are actually good for your skin. It's not tested on animals, which is super important for me. It's  formulated without parabens, mineral oil, phthalates, sodium lauryl sulfates and is gluten free. Tarte also offers some vegan products which are marked with a V symbol on their website. My latest Tarte cosmetic item is the Maneater Eyeshadow Palette. I love the cute animal print packaging! 🐆 This is a limited edition palette with 8 shadow colors. The colors are sooo rich and warm! They are purr-fect for creating a warm peachy brown look that can be natural looking or dramatic. Tarte includes a nice little guide with this palette for creating two looks, Naturally Irresistible and Voluptuous Vixen.   Here are the beautiful colors. The large pan ...

What is carmine?

If you are checking the ingredient list on your makeup, you might find Carmine listed on the labels of your pink and red makeup. So What is Carmine? Carmine is a natural cosmetic ingredient that you need to know about, especially if you are a vegan.  Carmine is a red pigment used in makeup.  It can be found in any cosmetic product (lipstick, lip liner, blush, eyeshadow, creams, etc.) that is red, pink, berry, purple or even a warm brown.  This is a natural ingredient because it is derived from a natural source. You may not like the natural source, though. Carmine is derived from a beetle. The dried female cochineal beetle to be exact. Yes, the insect that is a beetle.  The red coloring comes from carminic acid that is extracted from the dried crushed beetle. It is a safe, natural ingredient and is also used as a food colorant. There was a big stink a few years ago when people realized it was use in one of Starbucks strawberry drinks. Not to worry. Starbuc...
