DEET and Sunscreen

Labor Day Weekend is quickly approaching and many of us will be spending time outside enjoying the unofficial last days of summer!

We will also be fighting off those nasty
mosquitoes and stepping up the use of insect repellents containing DEET.

Be careful when you are out in the sun and using a repellent containing DEET. It can lower the SPF of your sunscreen leaving you vulnerable to sunburn. Use a sunscreen with a higher SPF than you would usually use. Apply the sunscreen first. Let it dry. Then, apply your insect repellent.

Conditioner Tip

wet hair
Dry hair needs conditioner to look its best, but are you getting the most benefit from your conditioner or is it just going down the drain?
Here is how to get the most out of your conditioner:

Shampoo your hair.

Squeeze out the water from your hair with your hands and then use a towel to squeeze out even more water.

Apply your conditioner and let it sit for 3-5 minutes. Your hair will be able to absorb the conditioner  instead of the conditioner just sliding off the dripping wet hair and going down the drain!

Long Shadows at the Beach and Sun Burn

sunburned skin
The best way to prevent a sunburn is to apply a good sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Apply it 30 minutes before you go out in the sun to allow the sunscreen to bind with the proteins in your skin.

For more sunburn protection at the beach, look at the shadows. Go to the beach when the shadows get long. The shadows start to get long at around 4:00 on a summer day. The UVB B burning rays are more scattered by the ozone layer when shadows are long than when the sun is directly overhead when the shadows are short. The UVB B rays are not as strong when they are scattered reducing the risk of sunburn.

There are other protective shadows to look for on the beach.

The shady shadows from your beach umbrella also offer protection from the sun's rays.  But don't get overly confident because your are in the shade.  UV rays still reflect from the sand and surf.

Hide your face, neck and chest in the shadow of a wide 3 or 4 inch hat that is cloth or has a tight weave.

Also, look for clothing with a high amount of pigment, not sheer white clothing, to absorb the UV rays before they reach the skin.

You can wear hats and clothing the contains SPF for sunburn protection. Check out Coolibar Sun Protection You Wear

Q&A: Folliculitis

pimply rash
Q. I have these little pimple like bumps on my legs. What could they be?

 A. It looks like it could be folliculitis. We all have staphylococcus and other bacteria normally living on our skin causing no trouble at all. But, sometimes the hair follicles become infected causing small pimples that can hurt or itch.

An infection can occur from friction from clothing, an injury to the skin or from shaving, especially with a dirty razor. Most folliculitis outbreaks clear on their own in a few days.

Here are some remedies to help it heal. See your doctor if the infection does not clear or gets worse.

Anti-bacterial soapWash with an anti-bacterial soap twice a day.

Apply a warm compress of 1/2 white vinegar and 1/2 water twice a day.

Apply an antibiotic ointment twice a day.

Clean Towels
Always use a new clean towel and wash cloth.

Clean Razors
Always use a clean razor blade when shaving.

Stop Shaving
Avoid shaving irritated skin until it heals.

Try Waxing
Waxing removes the hair from the root. The skin stays smooth for 3-5 weeks depending on the area that was waxed.

A Hairy View from my Beach Chair!

This was my view at the beach!

 hairy back
Gentlemen: you should not look this way. As my daughter says, "put your shirt on, nobody wants to see that!".

That hairy back can be cleaned up in no time with a little wax! Ladies: if we can bikini wax, the boys can back wax!

A back wax takes about 30-45 minutes and lasts about 3 weeks. Plan on a once a month waxing. That nasty back hair regrows finer and waxes off easier and easier each time. We have many men who come in for back waxing at the salon and they say it's really worth it. Let's see some clean, smooth backs at the beach, please!

See me at Styling Point in Media, Pa.  I'll wax you up!

A Penny and a Bee Sting?

copper penny

I had a client yesterday who was telling me about her bee sting. A bee stung her on her thumb. She had none of the traditional home remedies, such as baking soda or meat tenderizer, in the house. The thumb was throbbing and swelling. Remembering an article she had read about a penny reliving a bee sting, she taped a penny to the sting. It worked!

The pain stopped and the thumb shows no evidence of the sting. Of course, I had to investigate this matter! Many say it is urban legend however, copper peptides are being used in facial creams for healing and anti-aging purposes so perhaps there is something to it after all!

Here is what to do:

1. Find a penny dated before 1982. Pennies dates 1981 or earlier contain 95% copper. Pennies after 1983 are mostly zinc with copper plating. Pennies dated 1982 could be either the older copper version or the newer zinc version. An old fashioned copper penny may or may not be more effective.

2. Wash it! Money is dirty.

3. Tape it to the sting for 15 minutes.

Let me know if it works for you in the comments.

Yes to Tomatoes: Break Out Remedy

yes to tomatoes products
I'm always looking for an effective, gentle line of products to help clear and prevent break outs without irritating and over drying the skin.
I also like a soup to nuts line of products. I'm not happy when there is a cleanser and mask but no toner of moisturizer.Yes to Tomatoes Clear Skin is my latest product line to test out.

Yes to tomatoes does not disappoint! They offers a very full line of skin care products for oily acne prone skin that includes cleansers, cleansing wipes, toners, scrubs, moisturizers, a blackhead removal kit, a daily repair treatment and clay masks. They also have a nice detoxifying charcoal line of cleansers, micellar water, wipes, a cleansing bar, scrub and masks.

My daughters and I have been trying the Daily Clarifying Cleanser and the Daily Repair Treatment. Both contain skin healing aloe and tomato extract. The cleanser also contains watermelon seed extract.

The Daily Repair Treatment contains lots of great ingredients to heal and soothe the skin including salicylic acid, witch hazel, bisabolol, pomegranate juice, lavender and ginger to help calm irritation and redness. Bisabolol is an anti inflammatory ingredient derived from chamomile.

We all find that our skin is less blemished and feels softer without being dried out. We are not crazy about the smell of the cleanser, though. But, we are dealing with the smell because the products are really helping to clear our break outs!

Definitely give it a try!

Don't expect a miracle over night, though. You need to give new skin care products at least a 2 week trial as with any other acne treatment. Find Yes to Tomatoes products at Target, Walgreens, Walmart and on Amazon.
