Folliculitis: Red itchy bumps from shaving

pimply rash
Have you ever had these red itchy bumps on your legs. They look like little pimples. It could be folliculitis.

What is Folliculitis?

It's an infection in the hair follicles.

Bacteria is the most common cause of folliculitis. We all have staphylococcus and other bacteria normally living on our skin causing no trouble at all. But, sometimes the hair follicles become infected causing small pimples that can hurt or itch.

An infection can occur from friction from clothing, an injury to the skin or from shaving, especially with a dirty razor.

Most folliculitis outbreaks are minor and clear on their own in a few days.

See your doctor if the infection is severe, does not clear or gets worse.

Here are some remedies you can try to help it heal.

Folliculitis Remedies

Anti-bacterial soap
Wash with an anti-bacterial soap twice a day to kill the bacteria.

Apply a warm compress of 1/2 white vinegar and 1/2 water twice a day. Vinegar will calm the inflammation and kill bacteria too.

Apply an antibiotic ointment twice a day to kill the bacteria.

Tea Tree Oil
Apply a few drops of tea tree oil after your shower. It has amazing anti bacterial and anti fungal properties.

Clean Towels
Always use a new clean towel and wash cloth. There can bacteria growing in used damp towels and washcloths.

Clean Razors
Always use a clean razor blade when shaving. There can be bacteria lurking in a dirty razor that can spread all over the area you are shaving. it can be especially bad when you nick yourself.

Stop Shaving
You can avoid shaving altogether until the irritated skin heals.

Try Waxing
Try waxing instead of shaving. Waxing removes the hair from the root. The skin stays smooth for 3-5 weeks depending on the area that was waxed. The skin can't be waxed when there is folliculitis, though.

See me at Styling Point in Media, PA for waxing services!!! 610 566 1070.

If these remedies don't help your follicutitis heal, the infection may be due to a fungus. See you doctor for an anti fungal treatment. You will have healthy beautiful skin again in no time!

A Hairy View from my Beach Chair!

This was my view at the beach on my recent vacation!

 hairy back
Gentlemen: you should not look this way. As my daughter says, "put your shirt on, nobody wants to see that!".

That hairy back can be cleaned up in no time with a little wax! Ladies: if we can bikini wax, the boys can back wax!

Now don't be influenced by that famous waxing scene from The 40 Year Old Virgin. That was far from the reality of a professional waxing experience.

Back Waxing Information

A back waxing takes about 30-45 minutes and lasts about 3 weeks.

Plan on a once a month waxing. The hair will need to have 1/8" to 1/4" of growth to be pulled out by the wax.

That back hair regrows finer and waxes off easier and easier each time you have it done.

Since the hair get finer, the more you wax, the less it hurts.

Always avoid sun exposure 24 hours before and after waxing.

Sunburned skin cannot be waxed.

We have many men who come in for back waxing at the salon and they say it's really worth it.

Let's see some clean, smooth backs at the beach, gentlemen, please!

See me at Styling Point in Media, Pa.  I'll wax you up!

Treat a Bee Sting with a Penny

copper penny

I had a client yesterday who was telling me about her bee sting. A bee stung her on her thumb. She had none of the traditional home remedies, such as baking soda or meat tenderizer, in the house. The thumb was throbbing and swelling. Remembering an article she had read about a penny reliving a bee sting, she taped a penny to the sting.

Guess what?

It worked!

The pain stopped and the thumb shows no evidence of the sting.

Of course, I had to investigate this matter.

Many say it is urban legend however, pennies are made from copper.

Copper peptides are being used in facial creams and serums for healing and anti-aging purposes. Copper is a trace mineral our bodies use to produce healthy cells. This cruelty free copper peptide product from Skin Perfection looks interesting to me. I think I need to try it!

The copper increases cell turnover rejuvenating the skin so it looks younger. The hyaluronic acid hydrate and plumps the skin making it look younger. Apply sparingly twice a day to your face and neck.

Also, copper bracelets are use to calm inflammation from arthritis.

Perhaps there is something magical about a penny after all!

How to Treat a Bee Sting with a Penny

Use the Right Kind of Penny
Find a penny dated before 1982.

Pennies dates 1981 or earlier contain 95% copper.

Pennies made after 1983 are mostly zinc with copper plating.

Pennies dated 1982 could be either the older copper version or the newer zinc version.

An old fashioned copper penny may or may not be more effective.

Wash it!
Money is dirty. Give you penny a good scrub with dishwashing liquid, rinse and dry it.

Make a Penny Compress
Hold the penny on or tape it to the sting for 15 minutes.

It sounds crazy but I'm always a fan of a natural remedy! I will definitely try to remember to treat a bee sting with a penny if I get stung. My husband is a landscaper. He may need this remedy more than me!

I did have a wasp sting and wouldn't you know, I forgot to try the penny remedy. I used some other remedies.

If you try it, please let me know if it worked for you in the comments.

Yes to Tomatoes: Break Out Remedy

yes to tomatoes products
I'm always looking for an effective, gentle line of products to help clear and prevent breakouts without irritating and over drying the skin.
I also like a soup to nuts line of products.

I'm not happy when there is a cleanser and mask but no toner of moisturizer. Yes to Tomatoes Clear Skin is my latest acne fighting product line to test out. Yes to tomatoes does not disappoint!

The Yes to Tomatoes Skin Care Line

They offers a very full line of skin care products for oily acne prone skin that includes cleansers, cleansing wipes, toners, scrubs, moisturizers, a blackhead removal kit, a daily repair treatment and clay masks.

They also have a nice detoxifying charcoal line of cleansers, micellar water, wipes, a cleansing bar, scrub and masks.

My daughters and I have been trying the Daily Clarifying Cleanser and the Daily Repair Treatment. Both contain skin healing aloe and tomato extract. The cleanser also contains watermelon seed extract.

The Daily Repair Treatment contains lots of great ingredients to heal and soothe the skin including salicylic acid, witch hazel, bisabolol, pomegranate juice, lavender and ginger to help calm irritation and redness. Bisabolol is an anti inflammatory ingredient derived from chamomile.

We all find that our skin is less blemished and feels softer without being dried out. We are not crazy about the smell of the cleanser, though. But, we are dealing with the smell because the products are really helping to clear our break outs!

Definitely give it a try!

Don't expect a miracle overnight, though.

You need to give new skin care products at least a 2 week trial as with any other acne treatment. Find the fabulous Yes to Tomatoes products at Target, Walgreens, Walmart and on Amazon.
