Itchy Bumps from Shaving

foliculitis
We all have staphylococcus and other bacteria normally living on our skin causing no trouble at all. But sometimes that bacteria does cause a problem. The hair follicles can become inflamed and infected causing small pimples that can hurt or itch. It is called folliculitis. It can happen anywhere there is hair but is especially common on the legs for women and on the faces of men who have curly beards.

Folliculitis can occur from friction from clothing, an injury to the skin, ingrown hairs that are easily cut during shaving, dirty exfoliating tools such as loofahs or from shaving with an old dirty razor.

A small break in the skin allows bacteria to enter in and causes an infection. Most folliculitis outbreaks clear on their own in a few days once you stop whatever caused the breakout.

Clean or toss your exfoliating tools. Be sure to use a clean razor blade for shaving after skin has healed. You could also try waxing to avoid the razor blade all together.

Here are some remedies to help speed up the healing process.

Anti bacterial Soap
Wash with an anti-bacterial soap.

Vinegar
Apply a warm compress of half white vinegar and half water twice a day.

Antibiotic Ointment
Apply an antibiotic ointment to the rashy area.

Clean Wash Cloths
Always use a fresh clean towel and wash cloth.

No Shaving
Take a break from shaving the irritated skin.

See your doctor if the infection does not clear in a few days or gets worse.

The Supermarket, Flip Flops and a Shopping Cart

Enter the supermarket wearing flip flops at your own risk.
Those shopping cart wheels can really wreck your pedicurešŸ˜”
Oh the hazards!
broken toe nail
This is gonna have to grow out.
A little filing and a polish touch up will make it look better as it grows. This break will probably take about 2 months to be all grown out.

It can be fixed in a jiffy at the nail salon, though. I have done it for a few clients who must have perfect toe nails at all times.

Broken toe nails can look as good as new with a little acrylic, just like fixing a broken finger  nail with acrylic. Acrylic is the strongest hardest nail repair material and works well on hard toe nails.

How to Moisturize Dry Dull Hair

dry hair
Hair can get dry and dull looking for lots of reasons. Thermal styling tools, sun exposure, chemicals in water, dry winter air, etc.

Here are a few tips to help moisturize dry hair and give it some life:

Massage your scalp for 5-10 minutes daily to stimulate circulation and oil production.

Don't wash your hair everyday. It can over dry your hair. Try washing every 2-3 days.

Use shampoo, conditioner and deep conditioner for dry hair. Aveda has a nice Dry Remedy Ritual Kit.  It includes a hair mask to use weekly to deep condition. At Aveda salons and at aveda.com

Make sure your conditioner has a chance to absorb into the hair.
When the hair is very wet, the conditioner runs off instead of absorbing into the hair. After shampooing, squeeze the water out of your hair before applying a rinse off conditioner. You can even use a towel to really squeeze it out. Leave the conditioner on 3-5 minutes, then rinse.

Reduce your blow drying time for less
exposure to the blow dryer's drying heat. You will save energy too. A blow dryer uses 1500 watts of energy per
hour!

1. Squeeze the water out of your hair.

2. Wrap your hair in a towel while you dry off and apply your body lotion.

3. Remove towel and comb out your hair with a wide tooth comb.

4. Wrap your hair in a towel again for 15 minutes.

5. Apply a styling product designed to speedup drying time. Paul Mitchell Super Skinny products displace water and constrict the hair for faster drying.

6. Divide your hair into sections to blow dry and style sections at a time starting at the nape.  Aim your blow dryer from the roots of the hair to the ends of the hair to smooth down the hair cuticle. Find Paul Mitchell products at salons. Go to paulmitchell.com

Use a thermal protection product before using hot styling tools like curling irons and flat irons.  Aquage Beyond Shine protects and adds shine. At salons. Go to  aquage.com for locations.

Use a leave in conditioner. A hot item right now is Moroccan Oil. It contains Argan oil which is extracted from the nut of the Argan tree. It is a vitamin rich, anti-oxidant oil that smooths and conditions hair without making it feel greasy.

Here is how to use Moroccan oil:

You can apply it to wet or dry hair.
Wash your hair and towel dry.
Pour a small amount of oil to your hands and massage it through your hair then, blow dry and straighten.
To reduce frizz on dry hair, pour a small amount of oil to your hands and work it into your hair for beautiful shine!

Find it in salons.

Go to moroccanoil.com for locations.

Eyeliner: Drugstore Brand vs.Prestige Brand

Does a waterproof Eye Liner Pencil hold up better than a regular plain old pencil? I decided to put it to the test.

I picked up a Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner at Ulta. It was a great beauty bargain in their 21 days of Beauty promotion, buy one get, one free. A great deal since one pencil is $20.00.

I decided to put it to the test against my favorite drug store brand Prestige, which sells for $3.95 on Prestige.com, to see which one held up the best. The Prestige pencil I tested is not waterproof but it has always held up well for me. Prestige does make an automatic waterproof pencil ($5.95) like the Stila pencil, but I happen to like the basic pencil the best. You can sharpen it to get a fresh clean point. So that's what I used.

On one eye I used Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner in Stingray. On the other eye I used Prestige Classic Khol Eyeliner in Black. I applied both in the same fashion: the liner then smudged the line lightly with a flat liner brush and a matte black eye shadow to help set it in place. I then went about my day which included a walk and painting my living room. Here is what my eyes looked like after 12 hours of wear.

2 different eye liners
Stila                                       Prestige

Both held up well, but I think the Stila pencil held up a little better. The Stila eye stayed darker and was less smudgy. It did look less smooth on the lower line, though. It got sort of cakey. The Prestige eye had a little more smudging. The line was more worn off on the upper inner line and on the lower lash line. There is no cakey look which is good.  Both eyes had a little smearing on the outer corners a little bit more on the Prestige eye.

Both smeared in a 10 minute shower. Surprising, the Stila was easier to remove with eye makeup remover and was less irritating to my sensitive eyes.

There was a difference, but not a drastic difference. If you want to save money, use the less expensive Prestige pencil for everyday use and save the expensive Stila to use for special occasions.
Note: Stila is no longer a cruelty free product!

NYX Le Chick Flick Waterproof Mascara Review

I am always looking for a good waterproof mascara. I don't need it everyday, but it is great on vacation and I always use waterproof on my brides. I am trying out a mascara from the NYX Boudoir collection, Le Chick Flick. It's an inexpensive mascara. Just $6.

It has my favorite bunny logo on it!

It went on beautifully. Smooth, very black and no clumping or flaking at all. It lengthened my lashes but the lashes did stick together a little bit. So far, so good.

I will be spending my day at the beach today to give it a good test.

It is holding up well so far. No smearing or smudges!

Well, it is now the end of a fun day at the beach and my mascara performed very well. Here it is after the splash test. Almost perfect. There are few very small dots after being exposed to water and they could be from my eye liner.
Look how good the lashes still look after all day! I didn't actually swim with this mascara on so I don't know how well it would hold up underwater for an extended amount of time.

Soap and water took most of the mascara off. Eye makeup remover was definitely in order.
It's good. I would use it again.

Urban Decay Blackout Eyeshadow

I love a nice matte black eye shadow that I can use as an eyeliner, but it can be hard to find!
Urban Decay Eye Shadow in Blackout is the perfect matte black!
UD Blackout
Look how nice and black it is with no shine at all!
urban decay blackout single shadow
It goes on smooth and even creating a beautiful soft line.
lined eye
I do hate the fallout during application, though.
It's so black. Be sure to tap off your brush or blot it on a tissue before application to help reduce the fallout.

It works great wet for less fallout.
Wet an eyeliner brush then swirl it on the eye shadow.
Give the brush a tap to remove any remnants of dry shadow.

You can buy Blackout as a single shadow
or
get the Naked 2 Palette. It's in there.

UD Naked 2 palette

Find Urban Decay single eye shadows for $19.00
and the Naked 2 Palette for $54.00
at Sephora, Ulta and http://www.urbandecay.com/.

Hibiscus Ombre Nail Design

Nail art ombre nail designs

If you are looking for inspiration for your nail art, just look to nature. The are so many beautiful shapes and colors. Flowers have been giving me wonderful nail art inspiration this summer. Look how beautiful colors in my hibiscus look on my nails! I created an ombre design using 4 nail polish colors.

I started by covering the entire nail with LA Girl Color Pop Nail Polish in Hibiscus. That's the most perfect name for this nail polish color!

I added Jesse's Girl Nail Color in Carolina Beach from mid nail to the tip blending the edge into the Hibiscus polish.

Wet n Wild Fast Dry Polish in The Wonder Yellow went on the tip of the nail.

Then, China Glaze Travel in Colour added nice iridescent glitz.

I wonder what flower will inspire me next?
