New Year's Resolutions for your Skin

We've reached the end of another year. Time to look forward to the start of a fresh new year, make new goals and try to fix some bad habits!
snowy trees
Here in the Philadelphia area, Saturday morning we woke to a fresh blanket of snow. I find it quite fitting for the end of the year and the beginning of a new one. It's like a white canvas ready to be painted or a blank page ready to be written on.

I always make New Year's resolutions. They are usually the same every year..... to be more organized and to make more money! I will use those old resolutions again and add more this year including better hydration. Water is so important for our bodies and skin. I find I drink a lot of water in the summer but not so much in the winter. Time to make a change. There are lots of other easy small changes you can make in your daily routine to improve the look and health of your skin.

Hydrate
We need water to live. Our bodies contain a good percentage of water.  The average adult body is 50-60% water. We need water to build healthy cells, carry nutrients to the cells, regulate body temperature, metabolize food, dissolve nutrients, vitamins, minerals, keep organs and joints insulated and lubricated and remove wastes.

More water means healthier, younger looking skin cells. It is recommended that we drink eight 8 oz. glasses of water each day which equals about 2 liters or a 1/2 gallon. Most of don't drink enough water or we drink beverages such as wine and coffee. Alcohol and caffeine dehydrate. It seems to be trendy to carry a water bottle where ever you go anyway. I like stainless steel water bottles.
swell stainless steel water bottle
They don't break and there are no worries of chemicals that can be in plastic water bottles plus, they come in a vast array of fun colors and patterns. Drinking more water is an easy change to make. I'm gonna do it!

Moisturize
Now that we will be drinking more water, we need to seal it in the keep it from evaporating from our skin. That's the job of a good moisturizer. A moisturizer puts a protective barrier on your skin to prevent water evaporation from the skin into the air. The best time to apply moisturizer is after a shower. Pat the skin dry and apply your moisturizer within 3 minutes.

Use a lotion or cream that you like the smell and feel of. I recommend Hempz products.
hempz grapefruit & raspberry creme moisturizer
We have been using some Hempz lotions at the salon and find we like them better than the OPI Avojuice we have been using for years. Hempz washes, scrubs and moisturizers feel great on the skin and really help the skin feel less dry. They are vegan, cruelty free, paraben free and gluten free.

Adding a big bottle of moisturizer to your bathroom is another easy change to make for the new year. I'm gonna add a bottle of Hempz Sensitive Skin Herbal Body Moisturizer to my bathroom!

Eat less Sugar
This is something I have been doing the past couple years. Sugar can cause aging inflammation due to a bodily process called glycation.

Read more on Glycation

I read labels and avoid products that have a lot of added sugar. I also limit the amount of sweets I eat which is no easy feat because of the little baker I have at my house always making delicious cookies, cinnamon rolls and other yummy baked goods! Moderation is the key.
homemade cinnamon rolls
There are easy ways to cut the sugar in your diet. Drink seltzer with a splash of fruit juice and a lemon or lime slice instead of soda. Eat low sugar yogurt and cereals. Add less sugar to your tea or coffee. Eat whole grain pasta instead of white pasta. Eat one cookie instead of two!🍪 You will have better skin and quickly drop a few pounds as well!

Vitamin C
Vitamin C is essential for the growth, development and repair of the tissues of the body which, of course, includes the skin. It is necessary for the creation of collagen in the skin. Collagen keeps our skin firm and younger looking. Vitamin C supports our immune system and helps skin injuries and breakouts heal quicker. Vitamin C also allows the oil glands to make oil to condition the scalp and hair.

Eat citrus fruits, strawberries, kiwi fruit, papayas, guavas, cantaloupe, tomatoes, bell peppers, dark leafy greens, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, fresh thyme and parsley.

It is also very easy to take Vitamin C each day. I like to take 500 mg each day but I don't always do it. Vitamin C is available in pill form, chewable tablets and gummies, even vegetarian gummies! Vitamin C can contain sugar when not in pill form, though. Check the ingredient list.

It's another easy change for better skin. I'll be taking a Vitamin C everyday starting today!

Better Beauty Sleep
This is the most challenging resolution for me. I tend to get creative energy at night which prevents me from going to bed early. Then, I hear every noise in the house, get too hot or my husband, the early bird, wakes me up too early so I don't get a good night's sleep. But, sleep is essential for our health. I think way to many of us don't get enough rejuvenating sleep. We have to make some changes for the new year.

While we sleep, our body is removing toxins, building elastic fibers that support the skin  and revitalizing skin cells. The body rejuvenates and repairs cell damage. We simply must have sleep to allow the body to do it's restoration. Try for at least 7 hours of sleep each night.

Help the skin repair it's self by using a cream at night that contains healing regenerating ingredients:

Retinol to stimulate the cells to make collagen.
Hyaluronic Acid to moisturize and plump up the skin.
Anti Oxidants to fight free radical damage.

Body Merry Retinol Surge Moisturizer contains all those things and more to help most skin types look younger and dewy at an affordable price $20.00 on Amazon!

That's an easy inexpensive change too.

I can do all of these little changes and be able to stick to them as well because they are simple & uncomplicated. If I can do it, you can do it too!  We'll see about my being more organized and making more money resolutions!

Overnight Egg and Cheese Casserole Recipe

overnight egg and cheese casseroles in oven
I always make this yummy egg and cheese casserole for breakfast on Christmas morning along with many other foods that have become Christmas day traditions. It puffs up so beautifully in the oven.
overnight egg and cheese casserole
It's a family favorite. My niece especially looks forward to it every Christmas morning. Many people have been asking for the recipe lately. I found out my husband has been doing a bit of bragging about our morning feast!!! This dish is very simple and is assembled the night before so you just pop it in the oven in the morning.

The recipe calls for bread. Sandwich loaf white bread works the best to create a light fluffy casserole. I use whole wheat white bread. Sara Lee makes one you can find in most grocery stores. It's more nutritious than plain old white bread and still works well.

himalayan pink salt
Himalayan pink salt is my go to salt for it's tasty flavor. I like to use sharp cheddar cheese or a blend of sharp and mild cheddar cheeses for bold taste.

Egg and Cheese Casserole
A Christmas morning tradition at our house!

6 slices of bread
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
6 large eggs
2 cups light cream
2 tablespoons butter
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper

Grease a 2 quart casserole dish that has a lid. Trim the crust off of the bread. Cube the bread into 1 inch cubes and set aside. In a medium bowl, beat eggs. Add cream, salt and pepper. Mix well. Place half of the bread cubes in the greased casserole dish. Top with 1 cup of cheese. Add other half of the bread cubes. Top with second 1 cup of cheese. Pour the egg and cream mixture evenly over the bread and cheese. Cut the butter into small pieces and dot over the top of the casserole. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake covered for 45-50 minutes until the top is light golden brown. Serve right away. Serves 6. Enjoy!

After Christmas Sales, Brunch Ideas for Christmas & Anytime

cat getting christmas stocking
Ahhh...the day after Christmas! A day to kick back and relax for me. The pre Christmas craziness at the salon has passed, along with all the gift buying, wrapping, baking and preparing delicious Christmas breakfast food.

My waffles and egg and cheese casserole are always a hit with the family. My daughter's
homemade cinnamon rolls were also a smashing success! She uses the Easy Cinnamon Rolls recipe from Sally's Baking Addiction. They are amazing!
brunch/breakfast food
Many people go out to the stores for returns, exchanges and after Christmas sales but not me. The after Christmas sales and returns can wait for another day. Instead, it's time to play with my new "toys"! Beauty gifts from my daughter and a few gifts for myself. I had to use my 20% off Ulta coupon before it expired on December 24th!
beauty products
The one product I was thrilled to purchase was the Lorac Pro Conceal/Contour Palette.
lorac pro conceal/contour palette
I use a multitude of concealer colors on one face depending on what I am trying to correct so this palette is fantastic for me. For instance, peach is great for covering dark circles, yellow is great for covering redness, light concealers brighten, dark and light shades sculpt the face. I will play with this a bit then give you a review on it. I have read really good reviews and really bad reviews. I'm sure the most accurate review is somewhere in the middle which I will give you so stop back soon.

The other product I am excited to try is Tarte Amanzonian clay full coverage foundation. I like my Urban Decay Naked Skin Foundation but I'm always willing to try new makeup.

So for today, I'll kick back, play with makeup, maybe shop online for some great after Christmas sales and of course blog a bit. I'll relax a bit before rush begins again. It will be time to start getting everyone beautiful for New Year's Eve on Thursday!

Snowman Nail Design

My 2017 Holiday Nail Designs
snowman winter nail design
The theme for my holiday nail designs this year is A Snowman's World.

I entered these designs in a holiday nail contest. I wasn't the winner but thank you to those who voted for me!😘 Click here to see the winners.

My inspiration came from our first snow of the season we just had, December 10th, here in the Philadelphia area. It was the perfect day to stay cozy in the house, watch the snow fall and paint the natural beauty a snowman would see on a winter day.
nail design supplies
I wanted soft colors: pastel shades of pink, mint and lavender, mauvy putty, black and white against a blue gray background with lots of icy sparkle. Acrylic paint is my favorite for painting nail art. It goes on smooth and it's easy to mix a multitude of colors.

I also used Zoya Jana
zoya jana
for painting my snowman's hat and pine cone design because it is the perfect mauvy putty color I was thinking of. Plus, it saved me the trouble of mixing up the paint.🎨

I started by polishing the nails with
Zoya Amira.

It's the perfect sparkling blue with a hint of gray to represent a winter sky.

My centerpiece, the snowman, was the first design I painted, of course. It is all about his icy, snowy world. He had to be the first creation!

After painting him, I applied snowflake adhesive nail art stickers, added some rhinestones and added glittery sparkle with glitter polish and glitter!

OPI Make Light of the Situation and some extra fine glitter added to the wet polish created an amazing dimentional sparkle on the white of my snowman. I just love how it catches the light! I used Make Light of the Situation and glitter combination to give all of the designs a shimmering snowy look.

icicles
These icicles from a storm a few years ago inspired my icicle design.

And the blowing snow, also from a previous winter storm, inspired my swirly
snowflake design.

After painting the swirls, I applied snowflake adhesive nail art stickers, added rhinestones and used a dotting tool to create my swirling snow storm.

And lastly, this colorful holly inspired my holly design.

There you have it. A glimpse of A Snowman's World.

It's always fun to create little works of art, especially on a cold stormy day. I hope my little designs inspire you to festively decorate your nails for the holidays and anytime.

Happy Holidays!
