What is Clean Beauty?: Beautycounter Makeup Review

You may have been hearing the buzz phase "clean beauty" a lot lately.

So what exactly is clean beauty, you ask?

Like clean eating, clean beauty is being focused on the health of our bodies along with being mindful of our environment. Clean beauty is using beauty products from companies who strive to create products that are free from proven toxic chemicals, use ethically sourced chemicals, are not tested on animals, and use recyclable packaging.

Many clean beauty companies are fighting for better regulation of the ingredients the go into cosmetic products. You may not realize it, but the FDA has very little regulation of cosmetics. Other countries are very strict about what goes into beauty products and have banned the use of many toxic, cancer causing, hormone disrupting chemicals.

Clean beauty includes all types of cosmetic products: body lotion and other body care products, facial skin care products, children's products, hair care products and makeup. The ingredients can be natural and organic but they don't have to be. There are many synthetic ingredients the are perfectly safe in cosmetic products. Those with allergies are usually better off with synthetic ingredients rather than botanically derived ingredients that they could react to.

It's something I've been doing for more than 35 years so I'm absolutely thrilled over the clean beauty movement!!! Finding beauty products I feel good about using on myself and my daughters has gotten a lot easier over the years, especially now. Life for me as a vegetarian has also gotten easier with the clean eating movement. Restaurants offer so many options now. Thirty years ago eating out was always difficult. I'm so happy about the clean eating and clean beauty movements!😁

There are lots of clean beauty brands. Some you may have heard of like Goop, some you probably haven't heard of. Let's talk about some of my favorite high performing clean makeup brands since I'm going to review some products from the clean beauty brand Beautycounter for you.

Quite often, a clean beauty makeup brand is a mineral makeup brand. I'm sure you've heard of Bare Minerals which started as a boutique brand in 1995. It was an early clean beauty brand as was Jane Iredale which began in 1994. There is also Youngblood which formed in 1996. Pur minerals is another mineral makeup brand I like.

Some clean beauty brands are organic like Juice Beauty which began in 2005. Vapour, which has signed The Campaign for Safer Cosmetics, is also organic. The organic, botanical and synthetic brand Ilia is a clean brand. RMS is another organic and mineral brand. W3ll People uses natural and organic ingredients.

I also like the natural herbal brand Honeybee Gardens, founded in 1995 and the way they donate to animal shelters. Then there is my beloved Aveda, which I began using in the back in the 80's.

Let's get to the Beautycounter products.

Beautycounter Makeup Review

Beautycounter uses a mix of clean, safe ingredients that are synthetic, botanical, and natural with some organic. The products are high performing quality and luxurious. This is a direct marketing company which sells it's products through consultants and through retail partnerships. They have skin care, body care, hair, and makeup products.

The products I am going to review are the  Countermatch Adaptive Moisture Lotion, the Tint Skin Hydrating Foundation, the Touchup Concealer Pen, the Color Outline Eye Pencil, the Lengthening Mascara, the Satin Powder Blush, the Brow Gel, the Sheer Lipstick and the Lip Gloss. All of these products will create my Easy Summer Makeup Look with Beautycounter  makeup. I did a video on youtube so you can see how the products looks and how to apply them.

The Countermatch Adaptive Moisture Lotion
beautycounter adaptive moisture lotion
This is a light feeling, hydrating lotion that helps the skin look a bit more radiant. I find it to be perfect under makeup. It a has a light barely there fragrance and works well for sensitive, dry skin and combination skin types. It is packaged in a pump tube to keep the product fresh. This lotion has a light fresh scent. I have not had any irritation or breakout with my sensitive, combination skin and my skin looks great!

I give it ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Tint Skin Hydrating Foundation
beautycounter foundation
I tried this foundation in the color Sand. The color blends very nicely with my skin. It is a light feeling moisturizing foundation with a dewy finish and barely a scent. It gives sheer to light coverage. I like more of a medium coverage to hide the redness my skin has in some spots so I build this foundation up with layers.

I find it wears pretty well. There is no creasing through the day but it does fade a little bit for me. I experience fading with many makeup products so that is not unusually. It doesn't get oily and shiny looking as the day goes on which is good for me.

It's packaged in a soft plastic tube that has a tapered end. It is easy to squeeze out the just right amount so no product gets wasted. This product also travels really well in a purse or makeup bag.

The Tint Skin contains sodium hyaluronate which is a great ingredient for adding moisture to the skin plumping it up and making to look younger. I need as much plumping as I can get!!! I have to say, my skin does look really good since I started using it. It looks clearer and more even toned.

I just wish it had a little more coverage. I find the Tint Skin also works great as a primer under a fuller coverage foundation. If you like a lightweight, natural feeling foundation, you will love this one!

There are ten very blendable colors to choose from Porcelain, Linen, Sand, Honey, Golden, Tan, Chestnut, Mocha, Cocoa, and Espresso. $42.00

I give it ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Touchup Concealer Pen
beautycounter concealer
I used this concealer in the color Medium 1. The packaging of the Touchup Concealer Pen makes it perfect for carrying in your purse or makeup bag to use for makeup touchup throughout the day. It is a pen that you click from the base to push the product into the attached applicator brush.

Like the foundation, I find the coverage to be on the medium to light side. I typically like heavier coverage to hide my dark circles. I do find it to resists creasing and is not drying or irritating at all. There is barely any scent.

There are 6 colors to choose from Fair, Light, Medium 1, Medium 2, Dark and Deep. $33.00

I give it ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Color Outline Eye Pencil

beautycounter eye pencil
I got this eye liner pencil in Black. It's a nice dark black. This is the kind of eye liner pencil that you sharpen with a pencil sharpener which is my favorite kind of eye liner pencil. It has a sponge tip on the opposite side of the pencil for blending and smudging.

I find this pencil has just the right creaminess to go on smooth and easy. It stays on very well for me with just a bit of fading at the outer corners at the very end of the day. I have no smudging or migrating or irritation.

I love this pencil and will order it again and again!!! It comes in 4 colors. Black, Violet, Navy, and Brown. $24.00

I give it ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Lengthening Mascara
beautycounter mascara
I am a bit of a mascara snob. I'm very picky about it. It needs to be very black, lengthening, non clumping, non flaking, non fading, keep my lashes curled, be easy to work with for daily application and make my lashes look bold and simply amazing! I'm sorry to say, the Beautycounter Lengthening Mascara did not excite me, at all.😞 It's a nice mascara if you are looking for a very natural look, which many of you are.

To start with, the mascara tube is very skinny which makes it impossible to use the disposable mascara wands I use when I do makeup application on a client. I know this isn't a deterrent for most people. It's just a negative makeup artists. I find the this mascara goes on smoothly and even with no clumping. It takes many, many coats to build it up to a bold look. It stayed on well with no flaking and just a little fading. My straight lashes (curled with a lash curler) lashes did not stay curled. It removed with not much fuss. It just didn't do enough to make my lashes look fabulous.

Like I said, it's a nice mascara for a natural look. I want bold. There is also a Volumizing Mascara I haven't tried.

It comes in Black. $29.00

I give it ⭐ It's doesn't do enough for my lashes.

The Brilliant Brow Gel
beautycounter brow gel
To get back to positive, I love this one!!! I tried the brow gel in Medium. It's a good brown for me. It's packaged in a small tube with an applicator brush. This brow gel is great for darkening brow hairs, covering gray brows hairs and making the brows look fuller. It can be applied to the skin along with the brow hairs to create a filled in brow look.

I find it stays on beautifully all day and feels soft on the brows. I've had no irritation and it removes easily. This product is available in four colors, Light which is a neutral beige, Medium which is a neutral medium brown, Dark which is a neutral dark brown, Soft Black which is a soft, cool black and clear. $24.00

I give it ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Satin Powder Blush
beautycounter blush guava
Let me tell you how I feel about blush so you know where I'm coming from in my review. I'm not a huge fan of blush. I just think the streak of blush color on the cheekbones can be very unnatural looking. I prefer the look of a bronzer and highlighter on the cheeks instead a blush. If I wear blush, I wear is very soft and blended. That being said, let's get to it!

I got the Satin Powder Blush in the color Guava, a bright, matte, happy pink that looks like will work well for many skin tones. This pink looks very bright in the pan but not as bright and when applied to my medium beige skin. The application smooth and easy, and the blush stay on fairly well and doesn't get muddy or blotchy. I find it blends well for a soft look. I had a small amount of fading by the end of the day. It has a soft powdery barely there scent.

It's packaging is a heavy cardboard with will recycle easily.
There are seven colors: Melon, Nectar, Guava, Passionfruit, Raspberry, Sorbet and Date. $30.00

I give it ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Sheer Lipstick
beautycounter lipstick lily
I purchased the sheer lipstick in Lily, a luminous neutral pink. It's a medium light color that has a nice satin glossy finish that I really like. It is natural looking and will look great on many skin tones. When you shop for lipstick on the Beautycounter site, they have an image of lipstick swatches with all the colors on the arms of models with three different skin colors. I find it quite helpful for choosing a color.

This lipstick is very smooth feeling and moisturizing on the lips. It has a light vanilla scent. It gives your lips an easy natural glossy look. Because of it's super moisturizing quality, it is not a long wearing lipstick. I really like that I don't need to worry about there being any unsafe ingredients when I unintentionally eat the lipstick off of my lips while eating food! I love the soft luminous look it gives my lips!

If you are looking for bold color, this is not the lipstick for you. It's a sheer lipstick. You will prefer the Color Intense Lipstick. I prefer a bold pigmented lipstick myself.

This is a good lipstick if you like a sheer wash of shiny color. This product is also a two for one product. You can also use this lipstick on your cheeks as a sheer cream blush. It has nice high quality packaging. This lipstick tube won't be cracking and falling apart! The Sheer Lipstick comes in 11 colors. $32.00

I give it ⭐⭐⭐ It's too sheer for me.

The Lip Gloss
beautycounter lip gloss
Let me start by saying I'm not a fan of lip gloss so it's hard for me to review it. I like it's shiny look but I don't like how it feels, how my hair sticks to it and how quickly it wears off.  I do think lips that have a moist shine look fuller and younger that matte lips.

Some people love lip gloss, though. That's why I purchased it. I know some of my clients will love it. In fact, the Beautycounter Lip Gloss is one of my client's favorite products!

I purchased the Lip Gloss in Bare Shimmer. It's a neutral to warm pink with a gold shimmer, a peachy pink nude. It's a nice color. This product also has a soft vanilla scent. It adds a lot of shine with a soft gold shimmer and looks nice over the Lily Sheer Lipstick.

For me, this gloss has a thick feel on my lips, as almost all glosses do for me. Again, I really like that I don't need to worry about there being any unsafe ingredients when I unintentionally eat the gloss off of my lips while eating food! It comes in twelve colors. $29.00

I give it ⭐⭐⭐ I'm not a lip gloss girl.

I have been most of enjoying the Beautycounter Products I have tried and think you should definitely try these safe, clean beauty products.

White Bumps Under Eyes: Milia

Have you noticed that you have little white looking bumps under your eyes? Some people call it chicken skin because the bumps look like plucked chicken skin. 🐔 Most likely those little white bumps are milia. They can feel hard or pearly. These bumps are not acne. Milia can occur when dead skin cells become trapped beneath the outer layer of skin. Keratin becomes trapped and builds up. A small benign cyst can form which is the milia. It's a cyst!?! Don't let that word scare you. They are harmless, but unwanted bumps.  They can occur on any area of the skin that tends to be on the dry side. They cannot be squeezed out like a blackhead or pimple because they have no opening. A layer of skin covers them. A hole must be created in them using a needle, then they can be extracted out. Read more about blackhead, whiteheads and blind pimples This is a common problem for the under-eye area. It is a dry, delicate area of the skin. I see it a lot on my clients. Heavy products

Dermatofibromas

This post is all about dermatofibromas and some remedies to help make them look better and ways hide them. It includes my Amazon Affiliate Links to help you find the products I talk about. Q. I have this brown bump on my leg that won't go away. What can I do about it? A. It could be a dermatofibroma. I see them often on my leg waxing clients. A dermatofibroma is a tan to brown benign raised bump more common in women than men and occur commonly on the legs. The bump feels hard under the skin and can be itchy, tender and easily irritated. A doctor will tell you not to worry about it because it's benign, but it's kind of ugly! Dermatofibromas are also called Benign Fibrous Histiocytomas. They are the result of some sort of injury to the skin such as an ingrown hair or a bug bite.  Be careful when shaving because a dermatofibroma may bleed and become sore if nicked. Don't think you can get rid of it by shaving it off. It will be an awful looking sore and will j

Dermatofibroma on Leg

A Dermatofibroma is an unsightly brown or red bump that is very common on the legs. They are also called Benign Fibrous Histiocytomas and are more common in women than men. They can hurt, itch and become inflamed easily. They are the result of some sort of injury to the skin such as an ingrown hair or a bug bite.  I have tried lots of home remedies on my dermatofibroma. Some help it look better than others but the ugly thing is still there! Read more about dermatofibroma remedies. There is only one way to remove it for good...surgery. It must be surgically excised out. A dermatofibroma goes deep into the skin. It will only grow back if it is cut off of the skin at surface level. The problem with the removal is it leaves a long scar that is about 2 inches or so long. It has to be done that way to be able to sew the skin back together so it is smooth and not puckery. Here is a picture of a scar from the removal of a dermatofibroma. This scar was also treated with a laser to imp
