What causes an ingrown toenail?  Ingrown toenails can be caused by a number of things. Improper nail cutting, tight shoes or hosiery, a hereditary tendency, a curved nail growth pattern, a fungal infection, or an injury to the nail can all cause an ingrown nail.  Signs of an Infected Ingrown Toenail If you see puffiness, redness or pus, this is an infected ingrown toenail and requires a doctors attention.  An ingrown toenail that is not infected can be worked on at home.  How to Treat An Ingrown Toenail Soak Start by soaking your foot in warm water with Epsom salts for about 10 minutes to soften the nail and the surrounding skin. Dermatofibromas

This post is all about dermatofibromas and some remedies to help make them look better and ways hide them. It includes my Amazon Affiliate Links to help you find the products I talk about. Q. I have this brown bump on my leg that won't go away. What can I do about it? A. It could be a dermatofibroma. I see them often on my leg waxing clients. A dermatofibroma is a tan to brown benign raised bump more common in women than men and occur commonly on the legs. The bump feels hard under the skin and can be itchy, tender and easily irritated. A doctor will tell you not to worry about it because it's benign, but it's kind of ugly! Dermatofibromas are also called Benign Fibrous Histiocytomas. They are the result of some sort of injury to the skin such as an ingrown hair or a bug bite.  Be careful when shaving because a dermatofibroma may bleed and become sore if nicked. Don't think you can get rid of it by shaving it off. It will be an awful looking sore and will j...

Latex and Food Allergies

It's summer and we all are eating more fruits and veggies. If you are allergic to latex you could also be allergic to some or all of the following foods.  Foods to Avoid when your are Allergic to Latex Banana, avocado, potato, tomato, kiwi, cherry, chestnut, walnut, passion fruit, pear, grapefruit, mushroom, bell pepper, mango, pineapple, celery, cantaloupe, apple, papaya, almond, buckwheat, wheat, fig, lettuce, peach, orange, peanut, strawberry, pepper, mustard, watermelon, bamboo shoot, carrot, coconut, apricot, peppermint, soybean, cherry, nectarine, and eggplant.  That's a big list!  I know kiwis give me an itchy tongue. Eyelid Dermatitis: Red Flaky Eyelids

Eyelid Dermatitis is the inflammation of the eyelids due to an irritant or allergic reaction. The eyelids become red flaky and irritated. The skin becomes scaly and crinkly looking. The eyelids burn and itch.  This is a pic of my friend's swollen eyelid. Sorry it's not the greatest quality image but you can still see how terribly irritated her eye was. She was using Latisse to try and grow her lashes and feels this could have caused her dermatitis. She also questioned if her hair spray caused it which happens to be a common cause.  Hair Products One of the most common causes of eyelid dermatitis is hair styling products. Gels, mousses, hair sprays etc. can migrate onto the face during application.  These products also transfer to your pillow as you sleep and then to your face.  Eye Makeup You would immediately think it was an eye makeup product that caused the problem but most likely, eye makeup is not the culprit. Eye makeup is formulated with...

A.  A stubbed toe nail really hurts and sometimes, they do fall off.  How to Treat an Injured Toenail Clean it up Clean the injury with soap and water then, use peroxide.  Apply the peroxide with cotton ball.  Put on some antibiotic ointment and a bandaid.   Daily Care Take care of the toe each day in that fashion as it heals.  The nail may fall off if a lot of the nail was pulled up from the nail bed. You will be able to investigate the situation better as the nail bed heals and the toe stops hurting.   Products to Avoid Avoid applying nail polish and using polish remover until the nail bed is healed. Both will sting the injured nail bed.   Keep the Nail Short Keep the toenail cut as short as possible. As it grows, keep trimming it. You may need to press on the nail with yo...
