Improve the color of your skin by eating your veggies. It's true. Research shows that eating foods containing carotenoids (a group of antioxidants) improves skin color and boosts new cell growth. You have probably seen it in babies. You know, they get that cute orange nose when they eat a lot of carrot and sweet potato baby foods. Of course, we don't want an orange nose, but we do want skin with healthy color. Does your light pink polish go on streaky? It's so frustrating! Some colors are hard to apply and tend to streak, especially the light colors that had a lot of white pigment in them.  Here are some tips to reduce the streaks: How to Avoid Streaky Nail Polish Mix it Shake the polish bottle well to mix the pigments in the polish. The pigments will go on the nail more evenly on the nail when they are  thoroughly mixed in the polish. Apply Base Coat Apply a thin base coat to your nails. Use a ridge filling base coat on ridgy nails. Apply Thin Coats Apply 2 to 3 thin even coats of polish. Don't try to fix the streaks on the first coat. The thin second and third coats will even out the streaks. Top Coat Use a top coat. It can help smooth out streaks. I have always loved Hawaiian Tropic Sun Care products. This logo made me love them more! But, the No Animal Testing logo is missing from the current bottles. I suspect that either the ingredients they use have been tested on animals or they are selling to a country, China, that requires animal testing. I sent the company an email to see what's going on. Please leave a comment if you know the current animal testing policy for Hawaiian Tropic Products. Thanks! I got a response from the Hawaiian Tropic people. Here is what they said:  "Consumers' comments and concerns are most important to us, and we are pleased to advise you that our sun care products are not, and have never been, tested on animals. Our testing involves groups of paid volunteers to use and test the products under the supervision of independent laboratories. In addition, the laboratory analysis that is done uses the in-vitro method of testing."  They never said why the cruelty free logo...

We hear over and over again that we must protect our skin from the sun by using a sunscreen. Many foundations contain sunscreen these days but is a foundation with SPF enough protection from the sun? As it turns out, foundation with SPF only benefits you if you are in the sun very  briefly.  Don't count on your foundation or tinted moisturizer alone if you are planning on being outside for a long period of time. The problem is, we don't apply foundation thick enough to get the SPF protection listed on the bottle. Plus, we would need to reapply frequently and would end up with caked on foundation. It is recommended that sunscreen be applied before foundation to give your skin the best protection. Apply a sunscreen to your clean dry face. Allow it to absorb for 10 minutes.  Then, apply your foundation.  A powder mineral foundation is a good choice because not only does it give you sun protection with a physical SPF, it is easy to brush on a little more throughout ...

You may have heard that there are different types of sunscreen. Some have a chemical sunscreen and some have physical sunscreen. So, what's the difference between a physical sunscreen and a chemical sunscreen? Physical: Reflection A physical sunscreen sits on top of your skin. Physical sunscreen is also called mineral sunscreen. It's not absorbed into the skin and reflects both UVA and UVB radiation through the internal metals it contains making it a broad spectrum sunscreen.  Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide are the minerals in physical sunscreens.   Mineral sunscreens are labeled with an SPF number which tells you the level of protection you get from the burning UVB rays and the deeper penetrating UVA rays.  This type of sunscreen is safe and ideal for people with sensitive skin, kids, expecting mothers, nursing mothers and anyone else who is concerned about chemicals entering their bodies. Q. I get an itchy rash on my thigh when I go in the sun. It is not all over. It is just one spot. Could it be my sunscreen? I've tried different kinds. Someone told me it was a sun allergy. Polymorphous Light Eruption A. Some people develop a sensitivity to the UV rays from the sun and get a super itchy rash of red tiny bumps and raised patches of skin when exposed to the sun. It is both itchy and sore.  It is called Polymorphous Light Eruption .  The rash occurs on areas of the body that are usually covered most of the year but are exposed in the summer or during a tropical vacation.  The rash is less likely to occur as the summer goes on because you become less sensitized through repeated sun exposure. The rash will take some time to go away. No remedy seems to work quickly. Try t reating the rash with over the counter hydrocortisone and cold compresses. I hate when I smudge my polish. Like most people, I can be very impatient waiting for my polish to dry. My favorite remedy: Seche Vite Fast Dry Top Coat.   It's my favorite quick dry top coat.  It dries super fast and glossy. Quite frankly, it's the best top coat ever!!! In my opinion. You can polish your nails, go to bed and wake up in the morning with no sheet marks.  It dries that fast.  It is formaldehyde and DBP free and is not tested on animals. It does have one flaw, though, if you are a person who is concerned about questionable cosmetic ingredients. I am one of those people but I feel the ingredient concern is low with this product. Seche Vite contains toluene as it's solvent. It evaporates very quickly which is why Seche Vite dries so fast. Some chemicals including DBP (dibutyl phthalate), toluene and TPHP (triphenyl Phosphate) used in some nail polish brands  can cause birth defects and are hormone disruptors. Toluene is als...
