Is Mosquito Shield Mosquito Control Spray Safe?

I need help my internet friends!

I have been searching, unsuccessfully, for information about the chemicals used in the proprietary Mosquito Protection Blend (MPB) that Mosquito Shield uses to spray residential properties. This is the Mosquito Shield franchise company founded by David Briggs, not to be confused with the Canadian Mosquito Shield Inc. company or Mosquito Shield Bands. Mosquito Shield claims their spray kills mosquitoes, masks CO2 and repels mosquitoes. I can't help but wonder what other insects it kills... bees, butterflies, lady bugs, fireflies, etc.

I spoke with a franchise owner about what was actually in the spray. He was not a little bit forthcoming about it. He just kept saying how safe and natural it is. He said it is so safe that the technicians don't even wear masks when they spray. Funny thing is, he did wear a mask while he was spraying it!!! When I expressed concern about the chemicals and the feral cats in our neighborhood, he said it was safe for them and actually good for them because the spray kills fleas and ticks. I sent the company an email asking for info about the ingredients and how the spray affects other insects but got no reply.

What I know about the spray from the information provided by the company is this:

It's 99.97% natural plants extracts...... but what plant extracts?

The rest is controlled materials, meaning insecticide..... but what insecticide?

It contains a waterproofing wax they call Rain Shield which allows the product to stick to all organic surfaces....what kind of wax? (I guess it also sticks to the feet of your children and pets and is tracked in your house to where it then proceeds to stick to your floors and everywhere else!)

They use "FlexBlend" technology -"Brings together the power of science and research to create the industry's only predictive spray technology"....not quite sure what that means!

They monitor mosquito population and weather conditions and adjust their program and rotate control products.

I don't like mosquitoes. I also don't like unknown chemicals being sprayed near my home. You see, my neighbors have their property sprayed by Mosquito Shield and I watch the over spray drift over to my property where we grow veggies and have a butterfly/hummingbird garden.

I realize that they have the right to spray their property, but I don't want unknown sticky chemicals on mine! So my friends, please, please, please share with me any information you have about the chemicals and natural ingredients in the spray or sprays used by Mosquito Shield. I thank you and the visitors to my garden thank you.....Meow!

Update: Fortunately for us, those neighbors have moved so no more Mosquito Shield over spray for us! I do see signs for Mosquito Shield at houses on other streets in our neighborhood, though. I'm still interested in finding out what's in it. Does anyone know?

Great News! Colin Purrington has provided me with the information I've been looking for! Mosquito Shield uses
D-allethrin and bifenthrin in their spray. These chemicals are pyrethroids which kill many different insects including bees, butterflies and fireflies. They can also kill birds that eat contaminated insects and fish when their water is contaminated.

Pyrethroids are also bad for cats. Cats are particularly sensitive to many chemicals due to the fact that they have insufficient levels of liver enzymes that help them detoxify chemicals like insecticides and essential oils. A cat could actually die from eating grass that has been sprayed with pyrethroids. Colin's post includes a ton of information including state laws which require notification when a yard is sprayed with insecticide.

Thank you Colin for the great info!!!

  1. Have you found out anything more about the ingredients? I had the same issue with a local MS company. Would not say what is in the spray. It is either something that people could do on their own for way less, or it is not nearly as harmless as they make it sound like.

    1. I still have not found out any more about the ingredients

    2. Great News! I have new information on Mosquito Shield ingredients and have updated my post!

  2. Oh my god I am so sorry that your neighbors are using this service without your consent. Don't they understand? I feel horrified of what's in this stuff. Our neighbor uses a green thumb company and we are downhill from them. Like you, we also use our yard to grow some of our food and are also horrified. It's so shady the vector control companies are dancing around disclosing their chemical blends. I'm certain if they did people would think twice about subscribing. Probably DEET 2.0...

  3. Help, help, help! My neighbors are using this company and the puppy and older dog have been getting sick. These two tend to chew on grass.
